View Full Version : link from DP - will it hurt your site?

Hey all,
I was wondering if it would hurt a site's ranking by having a link on this forum to a site that is totally irrelevant? For example if I want to get people to review my site (that is related to home furnishing), is it a good idea to have a clickable link in the post?
cheers!!!

No, its actually a pretty good way to get your site indexed since DP is constantly visited by the search engines due to a constant stream of content.

James DP is a great place to have your links. Google will index your site very quickly and you may also get some unique visitors.

It can't hurt. Think about it. If a link from XYZ page could hurt your website in Google's rankings, then your competitors could buy a bunch of links from XYZ page to your website, and by doing so damage your site without your permission.

Thank you all for your replies! :D Looks like the jury is unanimous on this one. It's just I keep hearing this that if your back-links aren't relevant it could hurt your ranking. I guess that is exaggerated.
cheers mates!

I'm curious, why not?
Because Google knows what a website is about right? If it finds a lot of incoming links from SEO sites it may draw some conclusions I do not want it to draw. No one knows exactly its present or future algorithm.
You may say "But if it was the case, then you could do this to your competition!".. Yes, you are correct, I'm one of those who believe googlebowling works.

backlinks from bad neighborhood CAN hurt your site. prolly not much, but can nonetheless
even right now your competitor can file DMCA or click bombed you which are also beyond your control....

I was talking about spammy sites which DP obviously is not. Yours is about unrelated sites and not spammy, so in your case the links will NEVER hurt your site

I agree and only link to my competitors, as Google will think that those are purchased links and exclude them from the index. In fact, I encourage others to use this same strategy by linking to my website with irrelevant links so as to get me kicked out of Google's index.
;)

Well if your site is one of those spammy site thats been designated by google as "bad neighborhood" sure, you can hurt your competitor. Or you can short cut that by filling a DMCA complain against them, or even better by click bombed their ads.
Since when does google stop doing anything simply because it could hurt competitor?..

Well, my website is about SEO..... so I actually do want Google to see my links on a bunch of seo pages, because those relevant links are better than just other random links.

It doesn't matter too much that the forum is not relevant to your site, it certainly won't have a negative effect on your site.

I like your reason. So if someone submitted to free submission site, that's mean not hurt his site but can take less effective for SEO. Am I right?

It'll hurt when a competitor does a backlink analysis, and ties your website to your DP name. Then go through your itraders and buy all the backlinks that you've bought. Not to mention giving them an insight into all your blackhat methods you've been using/posting about :D

Guys, DP links are all nofollow. They may not look nofollow on the page, but they are. There is probably an internal robots txt file that disables all links. Otherwise, it is gonna affect Dp worsely. So, I don't believe any link would hold any weight whatever. Also, I didn't see any of these links showing up in my Google link search for my blog. So, no use with it. No issues having thousand links from here.

I think you'' find google will consider your whole link profile instead of just every link individually. If all, or the majority of your links come from topically unrelated websites then you may be penalized, otherwise it should be fine.

dp links aren't nofollow, i don't know where you are getting that info from. i also see them showing in webmaster tools, and yahoo site explorer.

you said it! in fact, I always try to follow my competitors' foot steps online. I personally never use any reference to my best sites on this forum, at least not in a public way.
