I hope this is in the correct section.
why do people use tinyurl.com?
what are the benefits(other than just shrinking the url)?
is it a way to redirect and not show the original source?
thanks

I use tinyurl at times just to shrink the url. There are MUCH better ways of redirecting affiliate links.

TinyURL is use to make a short url for long web URL (usually, a deep subpage!)

I use it so I can squeeze more links in my sig sometimes if there is a character restriction.

If you convert your url to tinyurl, search engines cant detect them. you have an advantage if you are promoting somebody's products and you dont want them to know how you are promoting them.

Yah... there's no search engine benefits of using tinyurl, it's mainly for convenience when the search engine benefits don't matter

so if someone is promoting an affiliate link, tiny url is good for that? or is there other redirecting techniques that work better?

Redirects are much better for tracking your stats and clicks through to a particular aff offer. The redirect off of a main domain can also be watched as a channel through analytics. this last morsel can help you to see where the traffic is coming from and what keywords are being searched to bring that visitor sniffing around.
