View Full Version : My Backlinks from Dmoz and Google Dir are Wrong

Has this happened to others?

My site (see profile) was submitted to DMOZ a while back in a local catagory ... /California/Localities/L/Long_Beach/Business_and_Economy/Computers_and_Internet/Internet
and that is where the Google toolbar says our site is listed, plus if you actually go to that catagory you can see our site listed at the very bottom.

OK everything is normal there ...

But when you do the Google Backlink check "link:http://www.suchgreatheights.com/" you can see that it looks like we have a link in the catagory ... /Top/Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/ Designers/Full_Service/N/

Both for the DMOZ backlink and the Google Directory link. We aren't listed in that catagory. I never submitted it to that catagory, but somehow we have a backlink from it.

Is this a fluke?
Is it a Google error of not fully updating their data centers?
Does everyone else see this when you search our backlinks?

I'm am all down for free backlinks from Google and DMOZ, but it's a little weird. :D

Is there a site within that category that is redirecting to your site?

Is there a site within that category that is redirecting to your site?
As far as I know, No there isn't. There shuoldn't be any .... oh wait ...
Now that you mention it ...
We used to have Nerd Hosting (category N) and we redirect that traffic to our new site ...

Yep, that's it! :o

I should have known.
Thanks for your wisdom, I am not sure if I would have ever figured it out without someone mentioning it.

I wont get penalized will I?
For having a redirect.

No, you won't be penalized... although it will probably be removed from ODP at some point (when the editor figures it out), as redirects are not allowed.

Gotcha. Thanks for the help.

I guess I'll just wait for the editors to remove the Nerd Hosting listing.
Or would it be helpful to the editor if I told them about it?
Would they get my message?

Or would it be more benificial to me/not a big deal to the DMOZ editor if I left it there for more backlinks for the time being?

it wouldn't be a big deal if you leave it there. you didn't do anything bad, it's just that no one caught the change.

The editor will likely change it so it just depends on how often they clean things up
