Google says, " build pages for visitors, not search engines". Google also says, "Link to relvant content sites". Following this schema, I began creating content pages or useful article pages AND traded links with websites relevant to the content of the articles.

I felt this was a better approach versus creating another stupid directory with long lists of website links that are no use to my website visitors.

This has lead to quicker Google cache and PR for me, but I try not to use PR as a 'value metric' rather I personally consider what is 'valuable to my visitors'.

Here is an example of one of my linking pages.

after getting links from linkmetro sites my ranks dropped 300-400! Every one know automated links are bad and 75% advance member sites in linkmetro has automated link exchnage system. I don't like it at all.

I agree with rickvidallon, links within a content is the best way. But I don't ignore link exchange programs either. They still help increase your PR. I know PR isn't everything, but then I can't ignore PR either. By the way, I would like to exchange with you in a web content, rickvidallon.

Mine is a directory with SEO considered (http://www.thebest25sites.com), so I think we have a common theme. I can put yours on my home page. PM me if interested.

Manual link exchange is still the best way to go. It's way more time-consuming, but G seems to be cracking down on the link networks now.

Also, you can pick out only relevant sites if you do it by hand, but the link networks will put your link on any kind of site, even some spammy ones. Not worth the risk for me, but everyone is different.
