Do image backlinks count as backlinks?

I have a PR7 website that is linking back to me from their home page and from their links page.

Unfortunately Google has only indexed the link on the PR4 links page, not the PR7 home page. I checked the link; it is a banner ad to my website that is do-follow with no alt-text. Do image links not count as backlinks? Or maybe I am wrong that Google has not indexed it. I checked to see if Google indexed it by entering into the Google search box: the full URL of the other website and my domain name. I'm stumped. Any wisdom you can share to help is appreciated! Thanks, Noah

Image links count as backlinks but not as much as a related anchor text hypertext link.

Any type of link count as a link. Image links also count as a link. If you want to get keyword value from the Image link then use your keywords in the alt tag.

You are mistaken there, the alt tag in an <img> tag serves the same purpose as an anchor text.

That's how most images search engines find their images.

Hey Danny, Thanks so much for your insightful response to my thread. I really appreciate it. So, if I want to have Google find the link embedded in this banner ad then I should make sure there is info in the alt tag, correct? And what is the best data to put in the alt tag? Should I put my URL as the alt tag, or treat it like a place to put anchor text?

Your advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Noah

Yes, you should always ask for the proper alt tag when someone put a one-way image link for you.

If you want a nice image backlink this is what you want.
The title of the image should be your target keyword.
The alt text should be your target keyword.
The target keyword should be the title of your website.
Google image search is a good way to advertise if you know this.

You should put the keywords you would like to rank better in your alt tag, and no never put your URL in the alt tag, as that will not do you any good, you will only be helping yourself rank better when someone types in your url in the search engine's search form, and I'm sure you already rank #1 for your URL :)
