I am looking to purchase a .com/.net domain name that is general or shopping related. It must be PR5-6, and have a decent amount of backlinks, including backlinks from "authority" sites. I plan on using the name to develop a site.

How much should I expect to pay for such a name?

I think such a website will cost at least $3000

Does anyone else have an idea?

I would reckon that it would cost in excess of $5000 especially if it is an established site with good PR. And being a shopping related site, it is likely to be generating revenue, if not already doing so.

check out Namebio for prices on sales and sedo etc. Just be careful when you buy a domain that all the stats are not fake etc.

If a shopping domain is so expensive, then how much would a generic domain cost?

Well, if I understand you correctly, you wanted a domain which already has an established PR (and a high one at that!) and comes with decent amount of backlinks. Correct me if I am wrong but that usually only happens if there are contents of worth for the site and hence, the commercial value of it. A domain per se (without PR or backlinks) can be as cheap as $6.99 but if you are looking for the ones which come with your requirements, you must be prepared to pay for the commercial value.

would presume quite a bit of money required to get domain with solid stats like that, only shortcut is deep pockets :D
