In my opinion building backlinks with WordPress templates for example is a bit risky.
Google might decide to ban you especially if you place some keyword rich anchor text like "real estate chicago".

Yes, that's by bring them millions of spam-like footer links. But then again that would cost you a fortune.

So half a million is ok then? And how much is a fortune? I'm sure companies like BMW can afford to sponsor a bunch of templates to take down lets say every other car manufacturer.

From what I see you don't agree... but I'm pretty sure some sites got penalized in Google for sponsoring WordPress templates.
And I'm not talking about doshdosh here. I'm talking about webmasters using high traffic keywords as anchor text.

I probably shouldn't have posted the idea of having a footer link on a directory template but what I had in mind was giving people an idea in getting backlinks.
The way I added my link to a couple of templates was, I know the guy that built the templates and he added my links. I have 40 websites but only added a couple of links. Wishing I had more money to add the rest of my sites. I do have a social bookmarking site and I know people already know thats a good place to advertise but I was looking for MORE!!!!!!! Thanks guys
