my site is in top 10 for keyword in google and msn, but number 352 in yahoo.

This link checker (http://www.submitexpress.com/cgi-bin/linkpoptest/popular.pl?url1=www.overruled.org&url2=&url3=&email=&mail_list=&back=-2) says both google and yahoo have 0 backlinks for me but a search on yahoo for link:http://www.overruled.org (http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=link%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.overruled.org&ei=UTF-8&fr=sfp&n=20&fl=0&x=wrt) brings up 79 entries.... and google's 0 is bullsh*t too.
the site is over a year old, with most optimizations occurring within last 4, 5 months.

i thought google was the hardest to rank well in....
Any ideas guys?

Are you crosslinking on the same IP/Class C block? That's a no-no. You have links out in bad neighborhoods? Poison words on page? Justa couple Ideas.

So yahoo penalizes for linking between sites on the same server?

Brianna, curious to know what you mean by Poison words on the page?

Google only shows a fraction of backlinks and it will never be as many as yahoo or msn. Google is also a lot more selective of what it will count as a backlink - and it's also possible they haven't updated their backlinks since you obtained them.

Ranking well with google is different than yahoo or msn, which have different algorithms with tend to have a higher tolerance for keyword density, etc. It can be extremely difficult to rank in the top ten on all three search engines for any competitive keyword - i.e. SEO for a top ranking in yahoo might get you an over-optimization penalty with google.

Google likes quality backlinks from relevant sites - MSN and yahoo are a lot less selective.

Always make sure you check the DP keyword suggestion tool for searches for your keyword. Make sure there are people searching for the keyword or a high ranking doesn't mean anything.

that would explain some stuff actually, my blog and website are on the same server tho yahoo always shown up my blog on SERPS !!! Never saw my website on yahoo serps.

Yahoo directory plays a role also in ranking on Yahoo SERPS.

Good ideas, but it's not any of those.

Google only shows a fraction of backlinks and it will never be as many as yahoo or msn. Google is also a lot more selective of what it will count as a backlink - and it's also possible they haven't updated their backlinks since you obtained them.
I guess that's possible, but remember, we're talking months here.

I could definately use some more of those....

i'm not necessarily talking about the lack of visitors.... I know i'm targetting a term that searched for only 5 times a day....
I'm wondering about the HUGE DISPARITY between my serp amongst the 3 major engines. I'm first page google and msn.... and i could see maybe 2nd or 3rd page yahoo but coming in 352nd leads me to believe i'm being penalized for some reason.

Is anyone else running into this problem?

I've run into that problem in the past and soon after I added my site to the Yahoo! directory I started seeing positive results. It looks like your site is not in the Yahoo! directory so I would try that if you have the cash ($299/yr).

thanks for the info brainR2,
$299's a little too steep for me though....

Top 10 in Google and MSN....nowhere in Yahoo??

Bottom line? I think most of us find Yahoo the hardest to score high in the SERPs. The reasons may vary, but I (and many others) find it very difficult to get Yahoo results that are similar to Google. MSN seems to be the easiest.

I agree with jim for the same experience I had. But using rss or blog surely can help. I honestly don't know how Yahoo changes its SERP. Mine goes up and down very often. But I have found one thing. Whenever I tried to promote my site, I got a bad result at Yahoo. It's very odd, but this can mean that promoting your site at Yahoo should be a rather slow process? Google and MSN seem to be easier for me too.

SEO for Yahoo is different from Google, too. Yahoo doesn't value the backlinks much compared to Google. Many say that using rss or blog would help at Yahoo, but it still seems to be hard to keep your position. I don't know how Yahoo index is maintained, but my SERP went all over in the last 5 weeks. It is very unstable, and it is very frustrating.

It seems like each and every search engine has its own way of ranking. We are suffering to maintain a balance..
