MSN algo seems to give lots of weights in anchor text.
I tested one of my sites by giving lots of backlinks with **relevant anchor text** and <H1> tag. Wow! No. spot 1 in MSN after 9 days! Good traffic too :D
No complaints but if this is going to be... I'd just scrape link exchange and use more ads. in the coop.
Can anyone compile a FAQ showing members how to legally increase weights? :D

MSN has been a great friend to me lately as well. Especially since when you to to MSN.com, they have begun using the beta search engine.

Looks like I'll have to roll out that beta (nichedynamics.com) sooner than planned ;)
Actually, were it not for the coop here, a lot of ppl would not be in such a good position on MSN (this includes me).. the question though - if it's this easy to influence results on MSN, how long is it going to last ?
Cheers

<H1> tag.
Are the H1, H2, etc. tags useful in SEO? I don't even use it.
What if you just use generic headers in a table?

Are you kidding? :)
They are very very effective! Of course H1 first!

My ranks at MSN are incredible, I am #1 for a keyword I was targeting, with almost 23 million results. All my other keywords are top 10 there.
However, the traffic I get is about 1% of what Google sends me.

msn could generate some traffic if the keywords have a reasonable popularity (# of times searched). I used to get about less than 10 visitors from msn a day. now I get about 200 from msn.

High traffic via Google is due to massive users.
To get good traffic (as good as in Google) via MSN, we need to pick the right keywords. Maybe I'm a bit lucky, because I have almost equal amount of traffic that I get from Google for certain keywords.
Is there a traffic estimation report for keywords in MSN? Looks like a great business opportunity to sell such reports, if MSN continues its domination plan :D

John, do you still need beta tester?
john_loch
Jan 22nd 2005, 8:25 pm
Yes, I'll be needing beta testers and you're welcome to participate. Once it's ready to go, I'll be emailing those ppl who've registered at nichedynamics.com, though I was joking about the early rollout ;)

I am ranking well for a new site (a few weeks old) somewhere around 2, out of a couple of mil - that kind of level, Very low traffic levels though.

I am getting good results with MSN (#1 for my main keyword) almost without any help from anchor text (just a few backlinks from forums). At the same time the site ranks nowhere (top 250) with Google for the same keyword phrase. My explanation on that is that MSN is giving more weight to optimization than Google does.

Bill Gates rules (never thought I would say that)
I am getting awesome results for a 1 month old site that seems to be sandboxed in Google and nowhere in Yahoo.
Its not just link text. I have some #1s that I probably don't have any link text for.
The one page has a really high keyword density (just over 10%).

Same thing here.... top 10 for most of my targeted keywords (and a lot that I haven't targeted for)... the msnbot has been very bust lately...
Spider visits for my forums for the past 36 hours;
Google visits: 242 | MSN visits: 808 | Yahoo visits: 158
Oddly enough I'm also seeing about 20% referrring traffic from MSN compared to ~10% from G.

Oddly enough I'm also seeing about 20% referrring traffic from MSN compared to ~10% from G.Same here but it is understandable because the masses are still using Google.
We have to the word out to the world that MSN is the best.

I just built my new site last fortnight (the one in my signature). It went live on the 14th of January, and I started submitting to search engines and directories on the 17th or so. Yesterday, I saw some traffic from search engines in my stats, so I checked "New Zealand Photography" on MSN and I have been ranked #2. I love MSN!! :)
I haven't optimised any of the pages for any specific keywords, but have "New Zealand Photography" in the anchor text in all back-links (only around 200 so far, as I have just started promoting the site), in the title and a H1 tag on the home page.
Google on the other hand will probably chuck my site in the sandbox for a few months. I don't get it. On one hand, they promise "fresh results" and on the other hand, they provide those "fresh results" from sites that are at least a few months old. What about fresh content from new websites?? Having said that, I do know that I won't get as much traffic from MSN's SERPs as I would get from Google, once I get ranked of course. So, I will continue working on my BLs to please Google!
The New MSN Search is indeed most excellent!
I was indexed in two days and am pulling off top tens almost accross the board for jewelry. My competition is sometimes over 100,000,000!

Seems like the new MSN is putting high value on the actual page content and not stupid back links like google.
Go Microsoft!
Now, get going on the advertising so people start using it.
msnbot sure is busy, hit stats over the last 5 days:
msnbot 4,224
Googlebot 180
Die google, die :)

I am quite excited about MSN as well and I do believe that Google would probably lose a bit of the market share. But, I can't see them losing their top-spot at least in the near future.
P.S: I am now ranked #1 for "new zealand photography" on MSN for my 17 day old site! :D

I am getting great ranks too! #2 in MSN for my newer site that's page 2 in Google. Everything else is #1. :D
Wow, I just did some more searching, and one of my sites is ranking #6 for a term that pulls up 2.6 million results, and I wasn't even targeting it. (The term that I am targeting only gets 60,000 results.) Insane. Microsoft is really in my good books right now. :)

I am positioned at #5 for my main keyword at MSN with only a few anchor backlinks.
My site has very little SEO, I only use my main keyword once in the title tag and once in the body text.
I bet if I optimize my site a bit more I could probably get up to #1.

for my site on google with PR2 i am not even listed in the top 200 Results 191 - 200 of about 6,570,000 for sexual health advice. so google hates me. ha ha
same search on msn = 51-59 of 9,288,093 containing sexual health advice. my site is listed on page 6 at the top. msn loves me ha ha
same searcg on yahoo = Results 191 - 200 of about 2,550,000 for sexual health advice. not even in the top 200 on that, yahoo hate me to.
they are the results for my main page. once i start looking for other stuff on them, (i have about 150 pages on my site) then things change somewhat. most pages are in the top 5 pages of results, and a few come back as #1 or page one. my site has never come anywhere on google i get most hits from msn, then yahoo, then google.

Yippie Skippy. So you get great rankings on msn. I do as well. But msn is such a small percentage of the overall search traffic that comes to our site that, yea it's nice, but certainly nothing to get all shook up for. If the serps can be so easily manipulated by IBL's and H tags, the index is doomed to become a spamdex as the se spammers gear up for their barrage of msn.

You are so right, if MSN starts to grow the spamkings will hit big time! I hope they make changes in their algo to make it a little harder to spam. But as far as traffic goes, MSN might become a big player, IF, they can keep the results from being completely spam filled.
I just found that a site linking to us golfclubgifts (dot) net is some sort of redirect to golf gods . com They have no cache for googlebot and the linking I have seen before but never to our site. I am trying to determine if this would cause any problems like a 302 would. They are not copying content but they are copying link anchor text linking to our site??? just looks strange. You would have to look at the cache on MSN to see.

RSS is an xml site feed that you can use with an RSS reader to keep up with the ever updating content from a website. Do a search for RSS in google for this site and you'll find a wealth of knowlege on setting one up and using the feeds. :)

Firefox is great. Click the orange icon and subscribe. it will put all the latest posts in your bookmarks for easy browsing. It will periodically check the digital point RSS feed for new posts and automatically update your bookmarks for you.

I think they will begin to shove their weight around a little more in the very near future. And I really hope I am still enjoying the high rankings when that happens.

Yeah, it does seem that they are pretty keen on gaining some (or most) of that SE market. We'll have to wait and see how successful they will be in their endeavours though.
I am surprised that they haven't created a MSN bar and intergrated it into IE, so that all searched go through MSN by default. Or have they??

Hi all-
I have a question for everyone here. I want to see what you think. I am ranking number #1 in MSN now also for the keyword photography website template. This has provided some traffic for me which is great and I have no complaints with msn at all.
However MSN is using that keyword and linking to my main page. http://www.crowntemplates.com. The weird thing is there are no meta tags or keywords with "photogpraphy website template" on that page just a link to another page on my site that I have optimized for the key words. Why does MSN use my .index hope page and not the optimized phtography-website-templates.html page? Any ideas? Do I need to submit more of my pages? It seems like MSN has been spidering my site regularly and is picking up all kind of changes and new pages added really rapidly. However they all direct to my index page. Is that common?
Thanks
