What are possible reasons for a domain being listed twice, as www.domain.com and domain.com at the same time?

I used to have this problem a couple of years back but I never managed to fix it. I want to prevent a similar situation now.

Thanks in advance
Brian (mxlabs)

In theory you could put completely different content on the two different URLs. Are you seeing both listings with identical content?

why would you wan to stop it? wouldnt you just have 2 listings in google and such... isnt that better

What shawn is saying is that google sees www.domain.com and domain.com as two seperate sites. Google has indexed both seperatly and sooner or later will just remove one (if they do have the same content).

so there is no way to prevent it?
but even more important: will they share the same PR and backlinks or are they treated as 2 completely different "subdomains" by the SEs?

They will be treated separately. Your best option would be to 301 redirect one to the other. Then links and PR will be combined into the destination of the redirect.

There is a little "how to" here.

what about:

forum.website.com ?

a different part of the site, so it should obviously have a seperate PR/listing
