The "hottest" niches should have nothing to do with what you're writing. You'll always make more if you write what you know, and simply learn how to market it effectively. "Hot" niches come and go. Specialties rarely do.
On that note, no one in their right mind would tell you about a hot niche they know about if they're making a good bit of money from it as a writer, anymore than webmasters are going to share their highest-paying niches with each other, upping their competition. Do keyword research like everyone else has to, or simply look through writing gig ads to see what people are actually looking for the most.

I totally agree with Jenn. No writer would feel comfortable sharing the "hot niches" especially if he/she has been raking in good money from those very niches.
Apart from keyword research, you could probably keep yourself updated with news and current events. You will have an idea of what the trend would be like --- i.e. what people would be looking for online.

One tip I got was to look for a magazine in a niche. If there is one, you know there is a market, now for what's hot in that market look at the cover stories. They have tons more resources than we do, don't reinvent the wheel, just roll with it. Low tech yes, effective yes. The trick is to be nimble.
I also like what Jenn said, the skill is in the marketing.

More than a writer I would talk as a webmistress if you ask for my input on thiis topic.
Hot niches are ephemeral trends as we are on a dynamica market called the Internet, a continuously flowing system in which what it's hot today may not be hot tomorrow.
Applied to the domains market you can see those trends running wild when people registering names related to the hot niche of the moment, domains usually dropped when renewals are due to the hot niche of the moment is just another.
Exception to the rule are those people who survive trends by means of specialization. Focus on a niche, master on it and you will keep it "hot" for as long as your marketing or networking strategy keep "the fire burning." ;)

very interesting what you wrote here. I believe it for sure. There are the people on the wagon and of course the people at the front steering it. :)

Perhaps being so obvious is the reason why people tend to forget it when it comes to find new writing pathways.

Like Jenn and others have said, niches are closely held secrets.

I'm always turning down "men's health topics." The world evidently needs more Viagra writers.
You can have that niche.

The world may need more Viagra writers but I can see them closely associated to spam sites.
Of course not all about Viagra is spamming because it is a drug widely used, though not always admitted, however this is much like the writing version of th INFO domains... they might be worth, but due to a few spammers abusing on such domains people tend to believe all are just the same.

I also seen them associated with spam,
But I ran once ran a web directory. 2 out of 20 submissions (about 5%) was a online Pharmacy.
I don't know how exactly they do it. That is sell drugs on internet. But its defiantly being done.

That's a curious fact, maybe someone should elaborate a bit writing on the pharmacy market writing potential.

Anything that concerns a basic human need or desire will always outlast current hot trends. While Viagra will come and go (pun intended) sexual health is evergreen.
Look at what was selling 50 years ago and of those kinds of niches what is still being sold. Personal development. Health. Relationships (dating mating) finnancial security. These niches never go cold. And if you develop a deep knowledge of the specific niche/market you can always catch new trends as they occur or perhaps even create the trend yourself.

I can tell you that ANYTHING you get in your email that is SPAM is a HOT subject and a hot niche. Cheap rolex knockoffs? That's one. Pharmaceuticals is, too. The adult and gambling industries, gaming, fantasy football to name a few. They are also getting crowded.
