I have joomla installed in my home directory. Thing is, i don't want the joomla index.php to be default homepage; I want my own html file which i created to be the default homepage.
How do I do this
PS: I tried editing .htaccess but nothing changed.

Install it in a different directory. For example: www.asamplesite.com/joomla/

If you want to have a different layout for the mainpage but still use Joomla for the CMS you can use the trick I always deploy for that situation.
Create a sitewide template for content items and navigation and create a seperate template that is used only for the main page. You can then set the default template in the Template Manager as the content template and assign the Home menu item to the front page template.
Aside from the hassle of maintaining two seperate templates it works quite well.
