Hello,

Thanks for taking the time to read my posting - I'm new round here and need some advice...

I want to register and build my own website and have been looking at the various options to register and host sites and there are just so many options…

I am based in the UK and I would like to register both .com and .co.uk and then look into hosting.

There are so many different companies out there who offer registration, but which ones are worth going with???

Is it best to register with a British company, or save money with one in the US?

Do I own the domain outright?

When I come to renew the domain will they charge me an extortionate amount to do so??

Freenetname looks like a great deal but does not do .com only .co.uk.

If anyone could advise or recommend some good deals it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again.

well, i register all my domains with www.namecheap.com - no problems whatsoever... been using them for a couple of years now... prices don't go up...

for hosting, i've used a couple. one of the hosts i'm currently using is www.asmallorange.com - no serious problems.

maybe you can try them?

I use GoDaddy for domain name registration.

The last time I did third party hosting I used www.tektonic.net (http://www.tektonic.net/) I was pleased with the control because I got to set up and maintain everything. This is because you are leasing a virtual Linux box.

1and1.co.uk are good and give free .co.uk domains when you host them.

I use www.namesecure.com although I've also heard great things for www.godaddy.com, but don't use fortunecity.com

namecheap, godaddy, if you dont have money go to namepros and earn NP points for a domain registration.

I have a British based registrar (Easyspace) but it has been a pain try to transfer UK domain names to other service due both their excesive fees at in addition to Nominet regulations.

Because anyone can registrar UK domains independently of their place of residence or the location of the registrar service, I have been purchasing my British domains through GoDaddy.

I cannot skip Nominet regulations but at least I'm safe of the "fine print" or strings attached by many British registrar services :/
