This is true, provided you're not using AdSense for Search - if you are, then you cannot display Yahoo! ads anywhere on the site.

why would it matter?

I'd guess it has something to do with "proprietary control". Although Google doesn't state the reason specifically, their ToS forbids "other contextual ads" and "ads that mimic the look of AdSense" (I'm paraphrasing from memory there) from being displayed on the same page as AdSense. Hypothetically, another company's ads that are somehow illegal, unethical, immoral, or not in keeping with Google's standards, could be confused for AdSense if displayed on the same page. Just a hunch on my part, but short of a formal explanation from Google, it's probably as good as any. ;)

Well it would seem that you can...

http://ha.ckers.org/

At the bottom of the page are google AND yahoo ads.

Additionally Matt Cutts himself has left comments on the site.

I always hate the "one rules for some, other rules for the others" system in place in the world.

Probably a Premium Publisher, I would guess. I agree that it's not fair, but it is in keeping with "the way of the world": Money talks. ;)
