I'm looking for a domain name for a site I will start soon. most of the names I want for .com have been taken, but I see a few .net domain names that are good. do you think it matters if its a .com or a .net and what are the advantages and disadvantages of this? such as the key words in the name, if any.
All the best

It hardly matters to the Search engines if it's .net or .com . Com is always better as it's more familiar with users, although ever will grow accustomed to your sites url. It's a matter of preference really.

.com is king. Always go with .com first. If you really want the domain name, then you can go with .net.

I agree 100% but the name I want is being offered at $4,101.00 for the .com and $9.99 for .net

As mentioned above, it is preference. If you don't want to pay the $4K, you can try to bargain for the .com. The .net @ $10 is always tempting.

You can always go for an alternative domain, that is a .com? Unless it's a must that you have the domain in question. Then go with the .net.
