Hi I recently took over the directory www.suggest-url.net
It gets approx 200uv per month. How can i make this directory more effective so people can come back regularly, and not just to come once and post and leave forever.
Any ideas? Help?

Change this to the new PHPLD 3.3 script that has links and articles. If you get some articles going this might get folks back to check for new articles.

Fresh content is the only way to get returning visitors.
Would you visit DP if it was never updated?

keep it updated, build links with good sites, approve links daily. Oh and I personally would removed google ads. Overall I think you got a good directory. Good Luck!

- make it free & paid directory ( some who submitted free will return for another free cookie :) )
- add a blog to it or use the article system and post in there regulary usefull stuff.
Btw : most who are just submitting won't return ever. But you might have some visitors willing to return. Try not to dissapoint the % of those who return. Maybe 40% will be spammers, 40% submitters looking for free directories to try to promote (sometimes crap) websites, 10% visitors only (from curiosity), but make sure the last 10% who returned one, will do it in the future as well.
And also promote your directory as aggressively you can, and don't expert to see the results next day! It takes time, and effort to make something unique and rise above the majority crap, and nonoriginal directories.

Change this to the new PHPLD 3.3 script that has links and articles. If you get some articles going this might get folks back to check for new articles. Why do that and pay out money when there is no need. All you have to do is get a free blog script and or a script with an article feature that's already built in.
Stickability with a directory isn't an easy thing, you can do what Mikey has done and add some features such as games etc, which lends to being more of a vertical portal or a good old fashioned blog.
A standalone directory will only ever get a level of return users as and when it gets a significant level of content, i.e results.

Im guessing you meant 200uv per week or 2000uv per month.
You may try and get listings in each category if you have the time, maybe upgrade and add regular articles, unique articles.
Stating the obvious but try and add a feature or two that you dont see on any or most other directories, something that sets yours apart.
