Sometime ago I used an online spider or site map generator that created and html page that had some very specific content inside. It mostly used H4 tags. I cannot find this tool again. Can someone here help me with a tool that produces a site map after crawling a page.

What is the point of having a site map? All my pages are linked back to each other through the navigation menu. Could I benefit from using a site map?

It is a good idea for every site to have a site map, particularly one with subfolders. One beauty of a site map is that you can put more information about your links that you can in regular menu.

In my opinion a site map is critical to a fast index. I also find that you can put your anchor text for your internal links to work. Sometimes regular navigation has to blend or mix with normal page content where with a site map, you can sharpen that pencil.

I usually include a sitemap of a new site in my signature around the various forums and on average I can get around 200 pages of a site indexed within a week or two. If I relied on normal navigation it would take signifigantly longer as it would have to work itself deeper and deeper. Instead all of my pages are within two clicks of the index page.

I also use an html site map for my forums and hand code links to individual posts in the beginning. This seems to speed up the indexing of dynamic pages.

AutoMapIt gives lots of info besides the sitemaps. Plus it does automatic updates to catch new pages and weed out old ones.
