View Full Version : Yes, you should all be ashamed

Note: this message applies to those who do the following.
One nice day a visitor comes to Digital Point and signs up. They're now a new member of this forum. Everything's fine BUT lo and behold they ask the wrong question somewhere, or say something COMPLETELY normal, which some assclown doesn't like, well let's give them some red rep for it.
New member, not knowing what he did wrong, makes a thread to ask about it. What happens? Other member who should be welcoming, red rep him.
That's stupid. You school yard bullies should be ashamed! I don't know what kind of example you think you are setting, I don't know what your goal is and I don't know why you are such assholes, I guess you were dropped on your head or something.
Treat people with respect. It's bad enough the stupid rep system is abused.
Fryman: Not this shit again or whatever you say. How do you think some of us feel to get rude, derogatory comments in our rep? Maybe you, who's sucked up to and feared, God knows why, doesn't know what it's like cause he doesn't get them or maybe you just don't care. Sorry we're not all like you!
No it doesn't mean the person needs help. Do you even know how many Americans are proven to be suffering from depression? Do you know how many get up and try to have a good day and a shitty comment like that can possibly ruin that?
Then you have your cronies who think it's so funny and post the picture for you. Don't you all realize you're attacking an innocent person!
The real jerk is the one going around giving red and saying stupid crap in the rep comments, and then the even bigger jerks are DP's very own school yard bullies.
Come put up your hands bullies, I know damn well it's some of you whom are very respected and looked up to, or who have #,### amount of posts.
You should all be ashamed.
How many good people are here who have to go around with toilet paper cleaning up your shit? I can only give good rep back to so many people.
Also, I think Shawn does enough here as it is, I think the higher ranks should have a little more respect for the little guy, with all this shit going around, this place is starting to stink. What a way to thank Shawn. WONDERFUL!
Oh and you can all play follow the STINKY shitty leader and bad mouth me, you can red rep me, do whatever you want.
I will defend innocent people. I will not stand for giving red for no reason. It makes me sick. Can't even make a thread about it, well you know what I say to that, too bad. Stop red repping for no reason then people will have nothing to YART about.
I think you all just like it, little power trip for you, would be funny to see you survive without a little anonymous rep function, I bet that would ruin your day.

Don't worry guys, the only red I'd get from this is from senior members. It's funny how people you know so long treat you like crap and the new people are nice.
Roman, this doesn't take a bad mood to post, it's a fact and I am not afraid to say it and I don't follow a leader, I am my own leader.
Thanks for the green, not required but nice of you all nonetheless.

When you have to be afraid to venture into a subforum here about a topic you don't know a lot about because if you ask a question to LEARN you will get red, I'd say it's gone too far and it has.

Great Post! I've been given red rep for asking a question which a dp member figured I should have googled.... I'm glad I wasn't new at the time - probably would have sent me cowering to a corner! This should be a sticky!

Or if they still wanted to try to be funny and help you out some at the same time they could have suggested you searched for it on Yahoo. :)

Sucked up to? Hmmm... colleen, you know me well enough to realize that I really don't care about what people think about me, including you, of course.
Sorry to see you getting up the wrong side of the bed, or maybe you just need to go visit this site (http://www.usdoctor.com/pms.htm)...
I am just sick of seeing people crying like babies about their rep... who gives a shit about it? If you get so messed up because of a comment some stranger makes on a forum then you really have some serious issues

Fryman, no one said you care what people think.
I don't need to be in a bad mood to state what's going on here and clearly, you instigate a lot of it. If that's how you deal with things, just say people have serious issues then sweep it under the carpet, that's your choice.
It still does not deal with the issue at hand.
And thanks for showing you're a sexist pig. Good to know. Miserable f**k.

Hmm.... I don't see why you people take it so seriously. I have just been posting the picture as a humorous way of saying "geez, again this same old stuff?"
I have ALWAYS said that rep shouldn't be taken as a life or death matter. Some people just seem to be willing to jump of a bridge when they get red repped. Don't take it so seriously, guys! Ask Shoemoney, he had loads of red rep when he got here, and now people think he is a moderator.

Its taken seriously by many because it is simply childish as hell to run around "repping" people simply because it makes you feel like a tough guy even though it is done in complete secrecy.
Glad to see somebody actually bring this up around here as it is nothing but a childish game for a few egomaniacs.

In my time here, I've noticed the same issue, not necessarily new members getting treated unfairly, but members beating each other up with reputation points for no good reason. This does one of two things: either it has a real impact on the members who get points unfairly, because reputation means something to DP, or it belittles the entire system and makes it meaningless. Either way, it's not good.
I received a well-deserved negative rep a few months back for posting bad information. It was accompanied by a detailed explanation of why the member thought I deserved it, and it was signed. The whole thing was very respectful, and I have to believe this is how the system was meant to be used. I'm certain there have been discussions on this, but I have to believe most of the issues would be cleared up if reputation was not anonymous. Many of the arguments against the losing of rep when you give it negatively are quite valid, and I believe taking the anonymity out of the system will end a lot of arguments as well as the need to dock members for dishing it out when it is deserved.
We considered turning on reputation at IWDN, on the request of a couple DP members who post there as well. We've studied the DP model for how it is instituted, and every time we think it might be a good idea, something like this comes up and reaffirms that reputation would not serve the community well. Is this the answer for DP too?

True. He says I have Tourette's syndrome and exaggerates saying I posted one swear word after the other, which I did not, you can read the first post of this thread as proof.
Swear words were placed strategically to emphasize points, all valid and proper. If he can't get it, that's his problem.

Collen I think you and I agree on the Utopian dream of DP. However, I think that there will always be the so called Frymans of this forum and members need to deal with them.
A forum is just like the real world, nice people and not so nice people. Members need to deal with them.
Leaving DP because of a red rep and dumb comment is like saying, "You know what I'll quit my job because my boss called me a jerk."

I dunno, Colleen, I see it like this:
If your boss kept calling you a jerk, I'm sure that other employees would soon realize that the real jerk is him.

I wonder how different that rep image would look if Colleen wasn't a cute female (I'd be willing to bet it would be much smaller).
For the record, I pretty much agree with Colleen on her post and that people asking about rep often didn't deserve the treatment that they received. But often people are red repped for good reason and this new change punished people who were just trying to make this community a better place by using the rep system in the way that it was intended.
If this were my place I would just get rid of the whole thing.

I wholeheartedly agree with giving red rep when it's warranted.
It was the giving of red rep for no reason that was really a huge problem here.
A new member looking for guidance doesn't deserve red and to basically be told where to go. Same as a senior member asking a question about something they don't know much about and getting red for it, that's 100% wrong.

I think perhaps it is more likely that it's an indication that a lot of people have felt that way for a long time, and were simply afraid to stand up and say something for fear that they would become the new target.

But you are right, enough is enough, I am done with these rep related threads. I'll go back to the Google forum and see what I can find over there.

Nice to see so-called "senior" members giving me red. You're obviously what's wrong with society today, people like you. You're the ones like that old man in the news recently who shot and killed a 15 y/o for walking on his lawn. It's truly disgusting!

Those saying that there is good reason for giving red rep, chances are they are part of the problem this thread is talking about and are just trying to justify it.
If someone makes a spammy post REPORT IT! You know you could just as easily report it and guess what.. something would actually be done about it!
So let's be honest, the reasons people like giving red rep are
A) It's anonymous and they can get away with it.
B) They often KNOW the reason they are giving red rep is bullshit and reporting it will expose that. So instead giving anonymous red rep makes them feel better.
I'm glad to see this new change Shawn and no offense but you've had your head in the sand for a long time over this. This is just a bandaid. The anonimity is STILL the real problem and I haven't seen one... not one... person post in any of the rep threads today saying it's not.
The fact that you are having to work to fix it should tell you all you need to know. I guess I can understand though, suddenly unmasking the anonymous rep would probably cause a lot of new enemies for some people. So should we agree that maybe... just maybe...... it never should have been anonymous in the first place?
Maybe the threat of it possibly one day happening will cause people to act a bit more civil from now on. The fact that you've actually done something and have stated this isn't over kind of leaves that hanging in the air so kudos for that.

GeorgeB.
Apr 17th 2006, 10:35 pm
Ahh... sure there are people like IamNed. Good point...
But for every IamNed I bet can show you at least 10 YART threads and probably 20 members who can take screenshots of undeserved rep from threads where they were simply tryign to participate or ask a question that someone who didn't have their coffee that day felt it "annoyed them".
Wanna take that bet?
If IAmNed had been reported instead of red repped how long do you think he would have lasted?
Will.Spencer
Apr 17th 2006, 10:41 pm
1.If rep was not anonymous, then I would rep everyone who redded me. We would just rep each other forever. But actually, no. DP users are smarter than that. People with little rep power would just not red people with more rep than them.
2. If rep was not available, then people would carry on more of their little wars in the threads themselves -- which would reduce thread quality and bore the hell out of everyone.
The best option if you don't like the rep system is to ignore it. If you ignore the rep system, it has no power over you.
GeorgeB.
Apr 17th 2006, 10:42 pm
Anonymity is not a problem. :)Thanks Will. You just had to ruin it didn't you :)
The best option if you don't like the rep system is to ignore it. If you ignore the rep system, it has no power over you.I know someone else will say it soim just gonna beat them to it..... "That's easy to say when you have a lot of green rep".
As for your other points. Those are good "theories" They may happen and they may not. What we KNOW is that anonymous rep isn't working now. Would you agree (if not read all the rep threads today :D)
So all I can say is show me a webmaster forum where the rep is NOT anonymous and these problems that you speak of actually exist to a point where it is disruptive.
Having said all that I do ignore rep. Honestly it's not the problem for me. It's seeing others be repped unfairly and it beign done in a cowardly underhanded sneaky anonymous way. I think that is just wrong and that's why Im posting this. Not because I care about my own rep.
Will.Spencer
Apr 17th 2006, 10:52 pm
It's not just a theory, it's my plan. If someone reds me, I will red them back. :D
Anyone can have a lot of green. Make intelligent posts. Don't make annoying posts. Wait.
I'm sorry, I just can't see a problem. I was a DP member for almost a year before I knew what those little green bars were.
GeorgeB.
Apr 17th 2006, 10:58 pm
Anyone can have a lot of green. Make intelligent posts. Don't make annoying posts. Wait.
Perfect example...
1) You think someone deserves less reputation because something they said "annoys" you? What does it take to annoy you? Is it just you disagreeing with them or is it somethign that breaks the rules? Because if it's a rule breaker doesn't the report button seem like the better choice?
2) Most new people don't get a chance to get to that point without getting rep gang banged. And it's not just newbies. I personally know top notch SEOs and webmasters in general (OK I don't like "know them" know them but know of them :D) that won't come here because of the childish anonymous rep gangs.
digitalpoint
Apr 17th 2006, 11:27 pm
As others have pointed out, making rep non-anonymous would make rep even less useful than it is now (and that's saying a lot because it's not terribly useful right now). People will be afraid to rep someone negatively for fear of retaliation (which definitely would happen).
I still think there is potentially some actual value in the reputation system, but it would be more like a small piece of a bigger system that replaces it.
Will.Spencer
Apr 17th 2006, 11:44 pm
Is it supposed to be useful? Is it really supposed to be useful? How? Why?
You're a programmer -- what are the design goals for the system?

In a sense you have turned rep points into a currency and we can now buy 1 negative vote to throw at someone for 1 rep point. Why not stock the shelves with other items as well.
Ex: I'd pay 1 rep point to be able to impose a 1 hour smiley ban on a person. (For 1 hour they could not use smilies)

This is great change in REP system bring alot confidence out of me. I am afraid to express my thoughts just for a reason that if people dont agree with me i will RED REps because in the start of my jounery i was RED reped for asking questions because i dont have enought knowledge people banged me with RED Reps.
I am here to trade and share my opinion but i cant express because i am afraid of RED reps as it will hurt my selling credibility i just keep my self quite and sit in the corner looking at the thread want to share my thoughts but dont have enough courage to post any thing. Even i get RED REPs for giving FREE phplinkdirectory Categories database the thread 5 Star (it is open and running) and still Get Red Reps the comments i get dont send PM to every one and it is by some senoir member as i lost 6 points.
But now i am happy with this new change it gives alot more confidence and freedom of speach. I would like to thanks Collen Publically for bringing issue

I agree; I like the new change.
I am worried that it will restrict red repping only to members with lots of rep to spend, but I think we will be OK.
The retroactive aspect was improper, from a purely theoretical angle. You don't change the rules of a game in the middle and make the change retroactive. It's bad game theory. But... who cares? It's just a game. :)

Exactly (but maybe not in the way you meant?). It sounds like at least 1 person lost some green pieces of paper to the person who started this thread (http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=65659). If the usage of itrader was encouraged people would be less-likely to end up dealing with people of dubious character.

No, I don't want to take that bet. I am sure there are those who abused the rep system. I just had issue with you saying:
"Those saying that there is good reason for giving red rep, chances are they are part of the problem this thread is talking about and are just trying to justify it."
Because there are plenty of legit reasons for giving out negative rep.
Do you know how often IamNed was reported? I know that I reported a several of his comments. Someone can be a total dick but it may not be a banable offense which is where the rep system can come in handy.

I thought of this ahead of time, but when I posted it there was only the first 5 and people could have asked me to remove their name, others repped me after knowing I was showing the rep and still put in their name, that to me means they must not care. I don't expect everyone to agree. I will happily blur out anyone's name if they want. I originally posted it to prove a point that the bullies give out red for no good reason, but to my surprise that hardly happened. I think it's a good thing for everyone to see for some reason. Don't give me rep or leave your name, simple. :)

I can see the point being brough out in this thread, at first I was a litle worried about posting anywhere incase people red-repped me but that didn't last long.
On checking my rep I'm now in the gray. I gotted red-repped off someone from a thread I've never actually posted on (odd as it may seem) but hey thats life, it's still going on and I'm still learning something new everyday which is why I joined DP at the end of the day.

I've had a single person (or 2-3 of them) tracing my "non general chat/political" posts down to make sure when they red rep me for my political posts, it counts as red instead of neutral.

In this thread (http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=33237&highlight=predicted+PR6+site) I asked pretty much to evaluate the price of a site that should be a PR6...
And this fryman guy out of nowhere just kept on pushing the fact that it was just a predicted amount, eventhough people like mightyb, biddoug, and others were nice this fryman kept on popping out everywhere with his negative remarks that in reality had nothign with evaluating a hypothetical situation. I'm just saying that thread was kind of like a turn off to me about DP members and I could see how someone might easily just leave because of that and not come back.
BTW: Fryman, a week after that thread the site did become a PR6 and stilll is

For me, it all boils down to this: Do posts of that nature make DP a better place?
It seems to me that many of the posts in question drive off new DP members, including some members that we want to keep.
It is a difficult line. You actually do sometimes want to drive off the weak and the slow members. :D

hmmmm another one worth -1 in my opinion...
Yeah I'm an ass i can admit it, but wow you are off base IMO...
Someone constantly rips others apart, and when some of those post about it the 'asshole' has a few rejects run to side...To damn funny to me..
Yeah, off base in your opinion, maybe! We're all entitled to one and I respect that, whatever it is. But it's all becoming a bit stupid, like everyone wants to try and rub his face in it... because of his alleged "bullying", isn't the saying something like "the pot calling the kettle black"?
and this "hmmmm another one worth -1 in my opinion..." (which you actually did :D) makes you no better than you think he was.

It's funny you should mention this. I just read DP for a while because to be honest it didn't seem the friendliest place. Look at how many threads I've actually started... 3 in total, I believe, because I didn't want to be flamed, because maybe my questions were stupid.
if I'm a reject because I think bullying is low and moronic, even towards someone who allegedly bullied others then fine. that's exactly the kind of reason I was hesitant posting at DP. it's like being back at school...

I'm not trying to "protect the bully". Maybe you are one of the lucky ones and have never been on the end of bullying. Good for you then, you never want to be. Just because a bully gets "neutered/taken down a peg" doesn't mean it's ok to rub their face in it back. Makes us the same as them. So because someone doesn't like bullying in general, never mind who it's against, that makes them a reject? Great. Thank you for your opinion.

I think you missed the point man, you are pretty much saying that is low and moronic for people to stand up for themselves, I'm sorry but I disagree with you...
Any person with any backbone at all would retaliate, it is not about being mature, sometimes some people need a reality check otherways they live in false understanding that what they are doing is right, it is not bullying it is more like punishement...
So basically you are saying hypothetically...
If a guy robs me day after day, it would be low and moronic for me to one day to say no more and beat his ass into the ground...
You compare it to school but you fail to recognize that this is basically universal in all things, people get tired of taking shit...

Then you're a lucky.. I got it even worse for when I stood up for myself, but I never stopped trying to do so. I know how bad it feels to be bullied and I empaphise with anyone who was bullied, but this situation is alleged, i.e. we all know fryman gave out a lot of reds because Shawn publicly showed how many, but the fact is we don't know who to and probably never will, it's speculation.

it's not low or moronic for people to stand up for themselves, I wrote bullying is. These are two different issues. For some reason, there seem to be posts in both threads on the rep topic keep knocking him and to me that isn't standing up to someone, and I don't like to see it happen to anyone. Sorry, but in the thread all I saw is he asked what it means and where sites at that pr are for sale at x price. I'd ask the same and maybe this makes me an asshole but predicted pr... well, I only found out what this is recently (maybe 3 weeks ago although apparently this isn't available from google any more?), definitely didn't know in October last year, never been that bothered with search engine stuff before but realised that nowadays it's much more important (not like back in 97/98, not sure if PR existed then, when I first started making sites, although just for fun), so I'd probably ask what predicted pr, although it might be a silly newbie question,... and his other one he asked where such sites for sale, I'd have wanted to know out of curiousity too - the more information I can get on a subject the better, as then I can learn more. Don't take this the wrong way, I'm really sorry, but I don't see how those two questions were pushing it. if he'd been abusing you then fair enough but he seemed to just ask 2 valid questions. after you kindly answered his questions he wrote no more.

ryan, tell me why do you think Shawn decided to change the rep sysytem? Do you know any reason?
To be honest, I don't know why it stays. It seems of no value before and no value now. There is another tool which seems a lot more pointful: itrader.
itrader seems of potential value before and still seems so now... and if you look in b/s/t and also s/f you'll notice posts by people ripped off. :( To me this is where some effort in posting is needed and might be good encourage to Shawn for change... I started a thread on it in s/f and well maybe it's because I'm a newbie making a thread or just no-one is interested in discussing itrader and how it can be improved. This is a shame, its use should definitely be encouraged in trade and I'm sure there are lots of cool things that can be done with it and it's more important to know if someone's good to deal with rather than the blob(s) (green/red/grey) that's below the number of posts someone has.
Ryan, you do seem taff in your avatar, if it's you of course.. russian maffia?

Yeah I don't think you don't understand discussion, we were not discussing whether bullying was right, you claimed people were bullying him and I explained to you they weren't they were just standing up for themselves, and then you comeback to me and say I'm not supporting bullying? Your a little off track, no one here is supporting bullying.
In my situation I was a n00b and knew very little about PR and how it effects the price of the site, basically what I took the wrong way was that before the second post where he asked for the links to the auctions where the sites where sold for a lot just because of PR he red repped me, which at that point knowing not a lot about the forum I took as a slap in the face an pretty disrespectfully, I guess you just had to be in my shoes - and at this moment I would have not reacted to him that way but the thing at this point I wouldn't ask that question - thats what this thread is about having a little more pacience with people who are starting out, if you don't want to help then don't, there are plenty others who will.
Anyways this thread is getting pretty annoying and I don't want to argue with you because eventually it would lead me to being a bully in a sense, as I'm not that patient

fair enough, I know it's not nice when an idiot decides to abuse someone, or click bombs their site, for not knowing about x topic or not being able to read their mind... sometimes one doesn't know if one's going to learn a lot from DP or just end banned from whatever cpc advertising program one's using because of some marauding moron didn't like a post.

Don't admit you are wrong for f***sake! You'll never hear the end of it and any future disagreements will result in the casting up of how wrong you were this time!
Here's what to do ... buy her flowers (I'm assuming you want to make up) and offer them to her. Just before she can take the bunch from your hand snatch them away, just out of reach. Ask her if she was wrong in your most charming manner possible.
If she goes goo-goo for flowers and romance and all that crap, er, lovey-stuff, then she'll fold and admit she was wrong just to keep the peace ... heh.

Flowers should be reserved for tuesdays, weds, fridays (i.e just becuase).....dont even bother with the flowers as a make up gift.

I think Ryan was saying that after Fryman is 'taken down a notch', or 'exposed as a bully' or whatever, fine. But when does it stop? Does he deserve a 'taste of his own medicine', or do you want to call him on his so-called shit to make him aware of what YOU percieve to be negative/hurtful etc actions nd then coexisit in this forum? And at what point do YOU become the so called 'bully'. Ryan was voicing an opposing opinion, a minority view in this thread. THAT IS HIS RIGHT.
I am pretty new here, and I have gotten red reps, and I was a bit miffed at first. But then I realized that is DOES NOT MATTER. You can not make everyone like you, it is impossible.
I can not speak for anyone elses experiance, but I personally have never had a problem with Fryman. If he ever was rude, snide or an a hole to me, I either never noticed it or moved on. I suggest we all do the same.

You are da Queen of da INTELLIGENT, there for an intelligent strong handsome dude should be your King. You are NOT da Queen of da Wackos!!!! :D
side note: Wacko sure seems to like to brag yet refuses my love...

u are way 2 pretty and intelligent to even be a wacko, let alone da Queen of da Wackos!!! :D

1. Start collecting nasty stuff.
2. Post nasty pictures and post audio of you singing!! If you sing a love song you'll probably be able to get any chick. If you havn't noticed, Colleens been beging me to sing this song (http://www.world-of-nintendo.com/nintendo/my_music/cheer_up.mp3) to her!! if you do it, she'll fall in love with you..if she hasn't already!!!
You can't do this, but for others, work on ending up a wacko. There, now give me tips!!!!
did I put the toilet seat back down just a bit ago ....
That reminds me, about five years ago I would try to go weeks with out flushing the toilet, even after going #2!!!! er that is until....my mommy walked in da house and went bonkers from the smell!!!!!! :D

Oh yes. Back then I also went poop just once a week, vs two or three times a day now!!! But when my mommy walked in...oh, it was REALLY nasty!! It was like the toilet was pluged up!!!! I'm guessing I had probably gone a month with out flushing it!!!! :D
heck, if I had my way I would never shower or put on deoderent. (I put on deodorant every three weeks, and shower twice a week.) :D

BINGO!!! Some one could put a one pount poop in front of my nose and I probably wouldn't be able to smell it. Now, after reading all this, are you sure you still want to be my queen!!! :D I'm sure GRIM is MUCH cleaner than me!!! And as da title of this thread says...Yes, you should be ashamed for wanting a dirty wacko like me!!! :D
er what was this thread about again!!!!

GRIM would definitely be a lot cleaner if he's not already, we'd have lots of nice hot showers together.
You really can't smell??
