Just register it if you really like it. I'm sure there are successful sites with "the" in the beginning, if not then yours can be the first ;).

"TheSmokingGun.com" is one of the most popular websites out there. If it's a good site, I think people will forgive the "the".

Sometimes The works, and sometimes it doesn't. But I think any successful web owner can make anything work regardless of The or not.

It would depend on the name, but if you can brand it properly, there shouldn't be a problem.

I'm not a big fan of it but it does work as mentioned in some situations and if branded and promoted.

I've seen plenty site that have 'the' in the domain that are very popular, just look at theadminzone.com for example. Sometimes the idea you want to put to use has to have 'the' in it to sound and feel right

If adding the word "the" in front of it, you can reg the name. Or course, adding it before the name will seriously dramatically reduce any value of the name.

I disagree, we rank in the top for "SEO Company" , "SEO Services" & our company websites does have 'the' @ http://www.theseoworld.com/

With good contents, SEO, and marketing strategies, I think even a website with a weird and incoherent name beginning with "the" would do well.

Domain.com is definetly better than TheDomain.com in terms of brandability. but if the Domain.com is already registered and if the word is a good one go for TheDomain.com
if you let me know the name can give better suggestions.
eg: TheGirls.com is great but if it is something like TheRentACoder.com doesnt seems good

@amitpatel: It's a bit irrelevant the fact that you rank top, despite the addition of "the" to you domain's name. That's because have great, optimized content, which increases the value of the website, not the domain name. Talking strictly about the domain name, "the" is a big MINUS to it's value. True, when corroborated with traffic and content, will worth more, but for a domain name resale... not that much.
So basically, the idea is this: Register it with "the" if you plan to develop a good website. Don't register if you plan to resell the domain name.

What if I plan on registering a name similar to "The Cosby Show". Should I put a "the" in front?
