A new web service that lets users rate and comment on the uniformed police officers in their community is scrambling to restore service Tuesday, after hosting company GoDaddy unceremonious pulled-the-plug on the site in the wake of outrage from criticism-leery cops.

Visitors to RateMyCop.com on Tuesday were redirected to a GoDaddy page reading, "Oops!!!", which urged the site owner to contact GoDaddy to find out why the company pulled the plug.

yet another reason to stay away from Godaddy.

Anyone who builds a site that lists over 100,000 cops with their names and badge numbers and asks for feedback is just asking for trouble. The only thing more risky would be Rate-A-Lawyer.com
If you are going to do it then be smart enough to get your domain and hosting off shore.

And the domain registered offshore as well.

True, but that is public information (varies by State I'm sure). Listing the residences, social security numbers, etc., of uniformed police officers is prohibited in my state. Other then that, nearly every public employee paid with tax dollars is free game.

Godaddy is not a good host whatsoever. I like Godaddy for domain names, but if the domain appears controversial I'd use a different Registrar as well.

The link kohashi posted here gave Go Daddy's reason why:

"The site's operator has publicly disclosed the concerns were over bandwidth," spokeswoman Elizabeth Driscoll writes in an e-mail "More accurately, GoDaddy's concerns were about how the RateMyCop site was far exceeding the amount of server usage for which it had contracted."

Sounds more like a technical issue than a legal one, although one can make it as
legal as legal can be anyway. Then again, Mr. Sesto has since moved the site.

I wonder if it truely was a bandwidth issue or if that is just the cover GD used?

This is an interesting topic, thanks for posting it Kohashi.

As Greengambler said we're not sure if it's bandwidth or other reasons
I hope it's bandwidth limits because i'm bored to see again GD acts as an arrogant childish registrar

GD is known for their dominating rules he creates on case per case basis
"Sesto refutes that last part, and says GoDaddy didn't contact him before cutting off the site"

Check more issues for GD here : ( www.nodaddy.com )

godaddy changes their story, he didnt exceed bandwidth, they said he was using too many server resources. what an awful policy. I have done that more than a few times over the years on multiple hosts. The good ones, contact you, call, email, etc. Let you know what is going on, how to solve it right away.

I think that Godaddy is good. Use Godaddy all the time for getting my domains. Host somewhere else though.

I use their domain service. No problem so far. I like their Account Manager user interface - it is easy to follow and you have all your domains in one place.

One has to wade through a vast assortment of crap to register a domain on GD. I gave up on that B.S long ago.

And then there's this: "Unfortunately for the startup, the company it chose for hosting is known to be quick to censor its customers. In January of last year, GoDaddy took down entire computer security website -- delisting it from DNS -- to get a single, archived mailing list post off the web." http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/2008/03/godaddy-silence.html
