Am I the only one that thinks the DP (http://www.digitalpoint.com) website needs a redesign?

It looks so 1999, especially this image http://www.digitalpoint.com/images/title_home.gif

It works... it's fast. The design needs to be fast and get the job done vs. winning some sort of design award.

Sometimes a new design confuses users and scares them away.

Found the site through google, searched "adsense forum" -- DP is 3rd on list.

Yeah, I'd never looked at the main site either. It does look a little outdated, but I don't think it matters very much, to be honest.

I must admit when I first started using the tools it wasn't fantastically easy to navigate around them but you get used to the layout. I have no doubt in my mind that on the list of things Shawn has to do redesigning the digital point site would be way way down the list.

Search Engine Forums

A new search engine forum is now available online to the general public. Topics vary, but include optimization and marketing with a technical focus.

That's from March 4...2004

Early last month some one registered here and was shocked that the boards had so much activity from the boards, with them being a few days old... according to the site!!! :D:D:D:D

I was thinking of the same thing, it loads so fast, why change it :? I prefer a website that loads in less than 1 sec than to wait for more than 5 secs (with flash and other stuffs)!

I'm in at the forum mostly. I am not a huge fan of the design, but if it works it works.

LOL it is only a little behind. I personally like the old design. It is fast and gets the job done. Also easy to find what I am looking for.

digitalpoint
Apr 12th 2006, 11:32 am
It was redesigned about 18 months ago (sorta)... The navigation on the left was changed from individually gif images to just text/CSS. That actually was a necessity because the site was getting so much traffic that the extra 15 or so requests for images per page view was wrecking havoc on the web servers. Also, the few images still there are defined within the CSS file (except for the one for the page title) to eliminate image http hits.

So... if someone wants to take a stab at redesigning it, be my guest... but it would need to be at least as easy to use, it would need to be smaller in size (for example http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/ is 7895 bytes) and certainly can't use more images than it does now.

How many images are you using for that navigation (the border I'm assuming)?
Currently i am using 3 images in left navigation, the total size of these images is 2kb in navigation and the main image(header) on homepage is 13kb. I have tried to use minimum images in the design as suggested by you.

Shawn, i can change colors or do some small changes if you want me to.

I would wait for your feedback.

I like the look Sumit and the fact you have keep it simple to use still.

Thanx for the positive response, it was actually a little difficult to design it since the site had to kept simple easy to navigate and on lines with current design and size of the page/image had to be kept low with minimum use of images. So, not much options were available while designing.

I honestly like it Sumit. Have you tested it to see how fast it loads yet.

I did not cut the HTML yet, but i am guessing the homepage with the main header image (which itself is 13-14kb) should not be more than 25kb and the inner pages would be close to 10kb.

If that sounds a bit heavy maybe we can do a little tweaking and save 1-2 kb more. Also, size of homepage can be reduced by either removing the header image or maybe use a lighter one.

Shawn, What is the current size of homepage of DP?

It can be pretty AND fast.
It's really bad looking, not as nasty as webmasterworld's design, but it's pretty bad lol

I am using currently blue theme for DP forum myself, anyways i can always change the colors if more people suggest. And definitely Shawn would've the final say, its his website after all.
The blue layout looks so much better then the green one, thanks i didnt think you could change it untill i checked after your post.

The blue is the default vB blue I believe! I think it looks a little weird with the green buttons/images though.

I don't think the design should be changed, but I think the logos and "page header images" can be drastically changed or improved. :) They're blurry...
