On December 18, 2005 I purchased my first Domain Name with Yahoo Small Business for the period of three years, and on January 26, 2006 second for period of one year. A week ago someone accessed my Yahoo Small Business Account Yahoo and deactivate both of the Domains. Since that person or system changed my password at the time, I reset the password and saw the Horror. I called Yahoo several times, and tried to resolve this problem over their online trouble system that in most cases takes several days in the order to get any answers.
Yahoo told me that this is not their fault, it is me who should be more careful, and that Domains are deactivated and they are no longer in the system.
I also contacted Melbourne IT, Yahoo Domain Name Provider, they said this is a Yahoo problem not theirs. A week ago I initiate Domains Transfer from Yahoo to RegisterFly.com but they reject that too.
At this very moment I have to change my DNS Servers, because I just purchased Dedicate Server for my future Business, however I do not have the access to my Domains.
Yahoo is trying to force me into buying extra service that I do not need in the order to get these Domain working again, and I refuse to pay them.
As far as their Web Hosting goes, STAY AWAY if you have larger Web Site, because they simple do not work. I tried all of the Packages from Starter to Professional and all the way up to Yahoo Merchant Professional. Every time when I had some kind of problem Yahoo explaines that the problem is not with them it's you sir. If you have a Site that runs on PHP, please save your money, nerves and time, do not use Yahoo.
Yahoo Telephone "Support" is in right the way, no waiting, "Support" by people that first of all is very hard to understand and second, and Support by the people that puts you on hold every time when you have a question, and when they could not answer for it. But even when you find good English speaking person, they will tell you that Yahoo is aware of the problem, and that problem will be resloved in next 24 hours.
IN ONE WORD THEY HAVE NO CLUE OF ANYTHING THAT YOU SAID.
Yes, it is great price for Domains and pray to Lord that you don't have any kind of problems with them.
Once again Do Not Use Yahoo Domain or Hosting Services, if there is a problem do not go thru Yahoo, report them to InterNIC which will forward your Complaint to IANA, and to Yahoo as well.
I will keep you updated,
Regards,
Emil

Yahoo web hosting is my 1st web hosting provider. I am with better ones now. One of the biggest mistakes that I have done online when making money is choosing to go with Yahoo for my web hosting.
I was paying $8 or so per month which was more expensive than other web hosting providers and I couldn't even have a mysql database or use php for what I can remember.
I didn't even know what these were at the time so I just didn't bother learning them. If I had them on my web hosting then I would have wondered what they were and found out and then started learning php.
Because I was with Yahoo, I had made my pages using html where they were just pure html for about nearly 2 years.
Since learning php I have quickly grown my sites and can keep them updated on a regular basis quite easily.
How I see it is if you were paying $8 per month, then you may as wells pay a little more and just get a dedicated server. I am paying around $274 a month for my dedicated server. I have had minor problems here and there only mainly because of me.
When something does happen and I can't fix it then I get into contact with them and they sort it out while I am on the phone.
This is very good customer service as I am a business and I need things to be sorted out straight away, if not then money is lossed and my visitors would get annoyed.

I have heard from others that is it easy to move domains from yahoo to another registrar like namecheap.
If you have domains with yahoo, move them.
Way back in the mists of time, I had a hosting account with yahoo, and my site spent more time not accessible to anyone than up.
Ever need good hosting, just PM me.

I had no problems with my site being down, once I cancelled my account with them and changed web hosts I had to phone them to find out how I could get hold of my domain.
They were quite good at this, it was a quick process. As my sites are for business purposes, I thought that it would be quicker giving them a phone call rather than emailing them as I would be the one loosing out waiting for the email not them. They would loose nothing as they were loosing me as a customer no matter what.
Also their stats were not all that good compared to some of the stats that I use now.

Yahoo has seized a bunch of my domains because I have some which I dont want to renew , they locked me out and thats that...
But I got a suprise for them.... wont say!!!
Anyone who has been screwed over by Yahoo please get in contact with me please via PM , I have a very well known internet law lawyer who is looking into taking the case.
On top of all this , they have overdrafted my back acount twice now in the sum of fees and charges of over 7000 dollars, Yahoo's actions are criminal and that comes from the Bank Presidents own mouth.
So if you have a legitimate claim against Yahoo, let me know and we might add your case to the class action suit

Sounds like some people really have problems with them.
I have not really had any problem with them, I just wish that I done a little more research and new a little more about web hosting before I jumped in and signed up to Yahoo as I realised about 1 year later that there were better web hosts online that offered much more for the money and then I was worried about changing web hosts just because I didn't want my site to go down as I had no clue on how to change my web hosting provider and domain name over to another web host.
That is why my domain is still on the same registrar as what Yahoo first purchased it on. This is because I was worried about changing it over to a different domain registrar because I didn't know how to, but I now know and I am now waiting for the time to transfer it over as I had re-registered it for 5 years with that registrar a few years ago and I don't want to move it until the renewal date comes near.

Most people dont relize that if you buy a domain with yahoo - they own it - you cant sell it and they can take it from you at anytime - look at their TOS
But they are guilty of false advertising , they place ads up everywhere - "Buy Domains" - but they sell you nothing - they lease it to you - so they violate the truth in advertising laws!
Anyone else got problems with Yahoo let me know!

I am very lucky then that I managed to changed the whois details of my domain then at Yahoo's registrar so that it is now in my name and I also have it on a piece of paper aswell in writing.
If they had kept my domain, then It would have really done me in as I had got all of my traffic, done alot of SEO and other advertising and designed all of my site and then moved to another web host. If they didn't allow me to have my domain then I would had have to practically start from the begining.
I am just glad that I managed to get it.
I hope that everybody else get's their domains and things as I know how hard it is to loose a domain name once you have put all of the work into your sites.

Good Question ,
They seem to be giving alot of people a hard way to go. I was just shocked when I began doing research about how yahoo holds domains hostage - if you bought a domain from them on a special - like 2.99 for a year you dont own anything - They own the domain, but here is the crazy part... when you do a whois search it lists you ... but it will say its got a registrar lock on in "locked" for transfer!
They say Buy your domain at Yahoo domains ... but if you read their TOS you will see something totally different!
Put in a domain transfer to another domain registrar - you just go to another registrar and put in a transfer request.

I guess you can probably pick up domains for a cheaper price elsewhere aswell. I can't see Yahoo being the cheapest if they register them with the australian site, which I forgot what it is called. I better find out soon as my domain is hosted there.

This post explains how to move Yahoo domains to another registrar for newbies.
:) .com and .net domains
1) Login into your domains control panel.
2) Unlock your domain if its locked.
3) Go to New Registrar site and order transfer of your existing domain.
4) You will receive a mail from New Registrar to accept the transfer. The mail will be sent to administrative email of your domain.
5) Accept it.
6) Within 5 days the domain will be in your new registrar account.
:D .org, .info, .biz, .us
These domains have a tedious process called authorization codes. Yahoo will create all sorts of probs. They dont reply to your mails. After they release the domains to MelbourneIT, they create some more probs.
1) Better have some ample time of expiration. If you want to transfer your domain today, then see that the expiration date of domain is in 2007 or so. Yahoo doesnt allow you to renew your domain.
2) Unlock your domain and cancel your Yahoo Domains plan for that domain in your domain control panel.
3) Mail to Yahoo customer care and ask them to release the domain to their partner MelbourneIT. Yahoo creates lots of troubles in this step. It doesnt reply to your mails or their customer care people give some misleading replies.
4) If you are lucky, then Yahoo releases the domain to MelbourneIT. After this, you will receive a mail from MelbourneIT with a registry key of the domain. If you dont receive a registry key, then go to melbourneit.com.au customer care and request for registry key.
5) After you receive your registry key, mail to melbourneit.com.au customer care that you want the domain authorization code of your domain. You need to mention the domain name and registry key in the mail. As usual they dont reply to your mails and will create all sort of hurdles.
6) Once you get your domain authorization code, go to your new regsitrar site and initiate the transfer of your domain.
7) You will receive a mail from your new registrar to confirm the transfer and enter the domain authorization code. Do it.
8) Then you will receive a misleading mail from MelbourneIT. Read it carefully and dont click on any links in that mail. They use misleading sentences to encourage you to click on the link. If you click on the link, then your domain transfer will be rejected by MelbourneIT.
9) The domain will be in your new registrar account within 5 days.
I have 2 domains with Yahoo and I transferred them to my new registar. Now I am having some peace of mind.
Any probs??? Post a comment in this thread or PM me.
Good Luck.

domain registration - godaddy definatelly; about hosting, well, depends what you want, godaddy is ok for one big site, like 70$/year for 5gigs of space, ssl dedicated ip and so; but if you wana host more than one site on account you should look around for hosting then;

If you want to host a bigger site, I would recommend dedicated hosting. At the moment I am using around 35gb's of my dedicated servers hard disk.

Yahoo is a bad host/registrar :o
No normal webmaster in his own mind would go with Yahoo for these services.
They use their good overall reputation to catch newbies and empty their pockets.
GoDaddy pretty much does the same with their hosting services. Low quality service, Bad customer service, Extra charges...etc.
PS: i have never experienced it myself, my clients and some friends did ;)

I recommend another DP members hosting "NOT MINE" http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=79105
He is a good guy and he is on top of the ball - really good support
for domains - registerfly offers 1.50 .info domains and specials on other tld's for excellent prices ..
The trick is to register and log in daily as they run daily specials on different domain tlds.
You can also check out www.FlyPaper.com for specials

I moved my .info domain to Godaddy...
Your site will not go down in the transfer if you keep the nameserver info intact.. There is an option at the new registrar (Godaddy is what I know) where you can choose it to keep existing nameservers..
Unlike a hosting switch, if you take care of this, there wont be a downtime..

Wow, this thread was pulled from the vault, but still useful.;)
Here's my story:
I had a problem with a domain name regged through Y!SB.
They got me with the $2.99 deal and it was my first domain name.
Anyway, I sold it a year later and, before the transfer happened, four weeks before the domain expiry, they charged me for the renewal.
I called and complained, explained that the domain was no longer mine, yadda yadda, and they told me they'd "have someone look into it."
I got a call back the next day and was credited for the amount charged and offered a free domain registration, which I politely declined.
It's all about customer service: don't get angry, just stand your ground reasonably and ask for a supervisor. If they offer to call back let them know when the best time is to call.
Y is not my favorite company, but they got points for giving me a refund.
Melbourne IT, on the other hand...
