ok, so what is theme jacking pages about and how and why do you do it.

Got an IBL from a completely unrelated site?
Got a link from someone's 'links page' that is titled 'links' and has anchor text 'links'

When the page that links to you has no apparent theme or topic to speak of, but perhaps some good PR.

Try this...

What page on your site have they linked to?
What anchor text would you normally ask for in a link to that page?
Go to you blog (for example), link to their un-themed links page (the one that links to you) with the desired link text.

Result...
Your blog links to
their links page
which links to your site
... creating a trail of anchor text.

The link page which was previously unrelated, becomes related!

You can do the same with directory listings.
The category you get lumped in sometimes is often very general in it's theme.
As long as none of your compeditors are listed there too, jack the theme of the page by linking to it with the desired anchor text.

There is no down side for the site that you link to with your blog as it's just another link into their site. Jacking as in hijacking sounds nasty, but you aren't taking anything away from them... just giving them a link which is useless to them, but useful strategically to you.

The point of the exercise is where you can't get links from pages within your search results, put the pages you do get links from... into your search results.

Isn't that just a reciprocal link? I guess the difference is that normally a reciprocal link would have the target page's anchor text, whereas you are using anchor text relevant to the donor page, which of course is your own page.

Assume you get the anchor text you want from their links page in the first place.

But their relevency to yours is poor or their page has unrelated anchor text powering it (like 'links' or 'resources' etc).

... it just creates a longer trail of anchor text.

page a (blog), to page b (their page), to page c (your site)

You would only really bother with links that you have which are from pr4+ page for example.

Directories also are a great place to do this.

Of course if you were trading links you wouldn't link to their links page from your site that recieves their link.

In the eyes of the SE's it's a themed trail if you do it properly.

This is a very interesting theory ... Have you seen it work firsthand?

I've only just started, but it makes sense doesn't it.

You can imagine the power if your blog has links to it with the same anchor text from on topic sites... that's a great trail of anchor text.

I shared this a while ago, and have found value in it's application since.

So I just wanted to highlight the thread again and see what your thoughts / experience with it is in today's climate.

More broardly, the concept of building links to top quality pages that link to your page adds to your trust score, by adding to the trust score of pages that link to yours.

Specifically, theme jacking is about making pages that link to yours more relevant by bringing them into your search results with some anchor text relevant to your page.

I forgot to mention... if you are looking at a page detailing the privacy policy or something like that on a well aged and trusted domain, that has internal links to it sitewide - that would be a great page to get a link from then theme jack.

Link Vault (http://www.link-vault.com/?ss=11185) is an easy way to throw a few links behind someone else's page, as is the co-op (http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/ad-network/?s=3286).

The point being it isn't a recip link... but a consensus trail of anchor text in one direction..... to your page.
