And getting an email like this?
Dear Dawgebooks,

Thank you for your submission. The website "$5.95 for Niche Ebooks" will be visited and considered for inclusion within 4 months.

To enhance your listing at BusinessSeek.biz, review the options below.

Obviously this directory is either way overworked for submissions, the webmaster is lazy as heck, or they really do not want submissions.

Maybe we should start a new list of directories that take more than one week to review submissions???
And then eliminate these directories from any free/paid list, any submission list that paid submitters use, etc.

Yes, there is a great truth that some directories over time don't even worry about listing much, or only about paid listings. That message you received is pretty amazing, but at least you got a response.

And a lot of directories just die away. Right?

If a directory doesnot list important/good sites of its niche, no one will use it. Before your dir gets popular you need to accept links.

If one has a directory, one must treat it as a business.
Like any other type of website, if one does not promote, does not take care of, does not update, it will die a slow but sure death.

I have seen directories that one day, were not there anymore.
Why I have no idea.

One who starts a directory thinking it is an easy business, a business that will make tones of money, had better be prepared to do some work.
With the adsense craze, seems like quite a few people come onto the scene not wanting a directory, but an adsense site that happens to be a directory.
See other posts just in this forum, people wanting an adsense directory.

I never really saw how directories are so good. I as a normal internet user never browse through them unless its something like hotscripts.com for good PHP scripts. I can see how they would make money if people used them but do any of you actually sit and browse through a directory?

directories are the new arcade/url redirection/webmasdter forum/free forum host site

everyone follows the others and creates one becuase they heard a guy made money from it and they want as peice
if you dont take care of it like iowadog said than your site will die

but its up the webmaster if they want to accept your link or not
who wants a directory full with spammy adsense minisites?

noone really even browses dmoz.. other than webmasters again check compeditors sites

the reason they are popular is becuase of cheap or free backlinks

In case you submit your site to hundreds directories in a short time, the directory owner, which approve your link after one, two, three.... months will do a great job for you! :) It is always better to get new backlinks gradually...

I agree that there are alot of directories out there and that they need to be treated as a business - I have a series of directories and our challenge everday is to find good quality articles ... People can do so good taking the time writing a great article ... but many are using these plr articles and its really hard to sift them out, but every dayu we move closer and closer to developing a means to do so.
