what's the correct code in htaccess to direct mydomain.com to www.mydomain.com ?
if I do site:mydomain.com I get 30k pages and www.mydomain.com 133k pages
could this be seen as duplicate content at all ?
what's the correct coding ?

I think you're looking for this:
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_alias.html#redirect

Does it have to be in .htaccess?
This is what I am using in my httpd.conf:
ServerName www.internet-search-engines-faq.com
ServerAlias internet-search-engines-faq.com
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.internet-search-engines-faq.com(:80)?$
RewriteRule ^/(.*) http://www.internet-search-engines-faq.com/$1 [L,R=301]
