hi guyz!
first all let me thank every single guru out there who helped me get started on the path to attaining higher ranks for my web page.
the links u guyz posted were simply outstanding.
however i still have a question which has bamboozled me completely and that is:
We have a character limit of 875 characters for Keywords. So is it better to have a large list of keywords with the words not occuring that frequently in that page
or
is it better to have a selected keywords list consisting of few words but which are repeated very frequently in the page ?
i would be really grateful if some of u pros out there could help me out of this dilemma.
Thanks a tonne guyz !

The web is made up of web pages, not sites.
Seperate your efforts over pages.
We focus one phrase per page and SEO / get links to match.
Home page should be one only, another page should be one only, etc.

On our sites, each page targets one specific key word/phrase only.

You are talking on page SEO
Concentrate the keywords to each page ie 1, max 2, per page with the one you want as the first and the "generics" as the second
Make sure you get the title and h1's the same and the internal links, nav, 'follow" the theme and provide the anchor link to those "secondary" phrases on those other pages

You mean just 1 or 2 keyword which are the most relevant to that specific page??
But I see many site have more than 2 keyword and serp well....

This thread is confused already. To talk about this subject requires us to be very exact or specific with our language.
1. A "site" is a collection of many pages. You don't normally optimize a site.
2. A "page" is exactly that, one page on a web site and optimization is done one page at a time.
I think the limit of one keyword phrase per page is too restrictive, but I do agree that it should never be more than two or three.
Most people start by optimizing their home page or index page first. The theory being that if you can get people to that page they they can find the other pages from there.
I believe the first question was talking about how many keywords or keyword phrases to put in the meta tag. Since this is the Google forum the answer to that question is that it doesn't matter. Google doesn't read or give any weight to the keyword meta tags.

Compar has answered your question perfectly - Google doesn't use the keywords.

Here's an informative article regarding keyword optimization posted by SeoGuy (http://seoguy.com/seo-tutorial/keyword-research.html).
For the most part, he's suggested sticking to a narrower pool of keywords to increase your strength in them instead of dispersing yourself with a clusterfuck of less important ones.

1 main keyword or keyphrase and then maybe add a few others, but with the page focused on that main one.
The pages should be well linked with each other with the main keywords being secondary in other pages.
basically that's what I would do.

Yes, as has been mentioned previously, Google looks at content not keywords.
Include your most relevant keywords in the beginning copy of your page....also make sure you use them in your headlines.
Good luck

If RattledByGoogle means the keywords meta and since this is the Search Engine Optimization section then....
Google does not index words/phrases in the keywords meta
MSN old does not index words/phrases in the keywords meta
MSN new does not appear to either
Yahoo does index words/phrases in the keywords meta

If Goggle does not consider keywords how do they rank sites and does that me an keywords are not important?
I am new to this so bare with me is this sound ridiculous did keyword research for my home page coming up wth 33 but have learned that is way to many especially from what I have read from here. I used some of those keywords again for seperet pages for specific products. Now that I have discovered my home page is to long I am going to make separate pages for each of the products on the bottom using keywords from the 33 that will work only on those pages and using the rest on the home page. Is this right.

If Goggle does not consider keywords how do they rank sites and does that me an keywords are not important? No one knows exactly how Google ranks sites except a few engineers deep in the Googleplex. If you want a reasonable consensus of what some professional SEOs think take a look at Search Engine Ranking Factors (http://www.seomoz.org/articles/search-ranking-factors.php).

I am still trying to master google, it's funny...when I bought my domain name, I didn't do any seo to it and I ranked up there with my competition (Google Top 10), then I re-designed the site and optimized it, it's dropped out of the top 10 in Google, but jumped to number 3 in Yahoo, and 2 in MSN??? What's the deal with Google?

I am still trying to master google,----- What's the deal with Google?
If anybody knew the answer to that question they would be rich, and they sure as hell wouldn't be telling anyone else.
I have felt that Google is having problems for a long time now, but you still seemed to get relevant sites when you searched. However I was doing some searches last night and for the first time I would say that the top 20 results just weren't relevant at all. They were pages that contained the search term, but certainly not pages that were about the search term subject.

a large number of keywords is good because you can put in low bids and with a large quantity of keywords you may actually get some traffic.

That comment isn't even close to what is being discussed here. We aren't talking about adwords or PPC, we are talking about optimizing for placement in the SERPs.
