Hi all,
Recently I've been asking questions regarding various social network and CMS scripts. After some consideration, we've decided to go with a professional package that we'll then customize to our needs. We're currently looking at DZOIC Handshakes, phpFox or SocialEngine.
So, here's a poll to see what you think of these packages. Your comments would also be very welcome.
Thanks! :)

I've looked at all of these and more, and give them all a thumbs down. Only the hosted versions are reasonable (e.g. Ning, Kickapps), but they own the data and it is a poor solution for building out your own domain.
After researching the marketplace for some time, I decided that it was not worth the time and effort, since I doubt I would ever get a return on my investment.
Can anyone make money off social networking? (http://www.links.com/make-money-myspace-facebook-youtube-digg-google-microsof-social-networks/)
Hope this information is useful to you.

I tried out social engine for a bit and was impressed with what they offer. The only drawback is that you buy the platform and get only the very basics. If you want to a functionality, like a gallery, then you need to buy that component. An extra $50 for each add on.

I tried handshakes its not that good.
Social engine is good i bought 5 licences for that but only used 3 i got one on sale now on dp.
by word of mouth only i currently have 1096 members and counting.
Its easily change able and easy addictive i get around 11,000 uniques daily on my main social engine script. The forum as 17,632 post they is 3,434 groups at this minute with a total of 46,000+ images lol it currently uses about 300GB bandwidth month and 58gb space so a shared hosting is a good choice as a start.

Can you please provide the URL ?
You may PM me if you don't want to make it public.
I feel a social networking site (if it's growing faster) will need dedicated hosting that costs very high, even though it may not earn you whatever you are spending...

My main social engine is not for sale
I am not asking for sale ;) I wanted to see the look & feel of how it comes as end-product.
its currently hosted with hostgator shared hosting
So you are doing with shared hosting for a site with 11,000 uniques daily, 17,632 forum posts, 3,434 groups, 46,000+ images, 300GB bandwidth month, 58gb space. Then HostGator must really be good to allow all that ;)
What is your shared hosting plan ? Can you please give link of that hosting plan on HostGator site ?
(I am looking for similar plan, that's why)

Swamp plan with unlimited bandwidth i have had no complaint from them about it.
It earns about $6 with google daily so not too bad compared to hosting is only $14.95

Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Social engine doesn't have a lot of features out of the box and I was a little bored after playing with it a bit. That said, it feels like cleaner coding and more responsive out of the box although you'll need to add in quite a bit.
1000 members isn't a lot and getting 11,000 uniques a day may have more to do with other factors than ti does the script, especially the images. If you host an adult site it's very difficult to compare that to other sites. I'm not sure what you're hosting that now has 46,000 images but most of social engine's appeal from what i remember wasn't a user gallery and there is none. Every user has their own picture gallery they can invite people to see.

I voted for SocialEngine because it is the most flexible. You have all the components you need, if you pay of course. But it worth..

Currently it is NOT allowed to sell your Social Engine license.
I have contacted the Social Engine support.
Currently its not possible to transfer a license to another person/company.

We try to make a deal but you dont even reply on MSN.
Even if you stay online, or just come online and i talk to you, you dont even answer.
You promise a lot, but finally there is nothing...
Useless to do business with such a person!

I chose Dzoic over the others, and have 3 sites based on it. 1 of the sites is fairly large with 20 000 members and I am quite happy with it too. Let me know if you have any questions.
