You can comment on other people's blogs and use your link to your blog. Just make sure their blog is dofollow.

Generally speaking, Backlinks are Links to your website hosted on someone's else site. In an ideal world, people will add your links to their website if they like your website a lot and want to recommend it to their audience. The more backlinks you get, the more popular your site is to the outside world as that is sort of treated as a reference or external endorsement. In Google's case, if a popular site has links to your site, it means even greater endorsement.
However, in the real world backlinks can be bought. Most of the time, you will need to add those backlinks by going to directory site, forums and anywhere on the internet and post your links to them. Once they list your links to their site, you get a backlink. Some of such places offers free backlinks with no obligation, some charges a fee and some require you to do a mutual backlink to their site too.

I participate in Yahoo Answers (http://answers.yahoo.com/), PC World (NZ), Mylot (http://www.mylot.com/?ref=pcsourcepoint), and Myspace (http://www.myspace.com/pcsourcepoint)(where I use feedburner to promote my profile) where you can leave a link to your site. As long as your site is relevant to the question (computer forums for me), you can get a lot of back links. But it's time consuming...

Article directories, the higher the PR the better. Also best if they are in your content area, but not a requirement.

well .. in my experience best way to go is .. search in yahoo for competitors' backlinks and contact each site and ask for a link exchange .. classic .. but still the best way to go :)

There's a new site called Qassia where you can submit information and facts (doesn't have to be a long article, it can be a few sentences and on any topic imaginable, as long as it's true information) and you get backlinks on your profile and for every "intel" you submit. Currently they're closed to open entries and only allow sign-ups for other member profiles, so you can sign up here: http://superblogging.qassia.com/
Backlinks galore! :) Let me know if you need help with it, the sooner you get in the better.
