Alright so i been reading up on yahoo and its recent low amount of traffic and was wondering what you guys think yahoo could do to get through this rough patch. This of course excluding "Becoming more like Google" as they have already stated that they will not follow or try to copy goggles tactics.

Well, their search engine traffic never will be as high as Google's, because of course Google is better. Google has a lot of free products and services, such as Google Adsense, Google Earth, etc. but Yahoo has plenty of things such as Yahoo Answers, and all of the videos and new articles on their site, along with their webmail. I think they should work on improving the features of their site that Google DOESN'T HAVE, so they'll be very strong on those points.

Yahoo will never beat Google but I don't think it's going to "die", either. :)

I remember reading a story somewhere that about 10 years back, askjeeves was one of the top seach engines, then yahoo, google etc.
What happened after that was everyone else drifted from being mere search engine to more like portal site. Google still remained search engine and they are much better and relevant.

The only bad part is : It is too difficult to get good ranking at google..!!

I doubt Yahoo would die. Yahoo is a strong company!

Yeah right! They gave me PR4 before, and they took it away just like that. I never asked them for it anyway.

If anyone could overtake Google, it's Yahoo. They need to get their sh!t together to get anywhere. Hell, even MSN is starting to send me a lot of traffic. Nothing like Google, and I don't think they stand a chance vs Google... but Yahoo? Different story. Depends on management and how they start promoting/improving what they have.

They should get rid of the portal. Obviously a Portal != what people want so they go to Google and there page loads in 1/10th of second and there no distractions just a search bar and a logo.
People want to search.

It'd be sad if Yahoo ever went under; it's in the interests of the Internet as a whole that there's some diversity in search rather than just one giant "dominating" it all... How about we have a "Just Use Yahoo" day where everybody gives the highly officious oracle a boost? :)

Yahoo mail is better than Gmail. I for one don't like the thought of having my e-mails read so a jerk can serve me contextual advertising.

Google may have the search engine, but for me Yahoo Mail is still the choice.

YPN is a very poor follower of Adsense, speaking the other way round, it can also be said that Google is following Yahoo by offering services such as Gmail, Google Groups etc.

in my opinion Yahoo! is not dying even if they plan to lay-off / cut-off a lot of their staff. Even they are not frequently crawling some sites, they are still one of the best search engine on the WWW. Aside from that, in our place we're still using Yahoo! Messenger and I still play on their Game site. According to Alexa.com, in our country Yahoo! is @ rank #1

I love yahoo mail, so even if people don't use the search engine as much, they are still using other services on a regular basis. I'd use yahoo more often if they didn't have so much stuff on their search engine page.. I'm not saying they should follow Google's Tactics, but they really should consider seperating the search engine from all that extra stuff like news and videos.

for example Google already stopped their answer site. And i'm not sure that Yahoo mail is better than Gmail . For me - like everyday user - gmail is more light and easy to use , the new version ot yahoo mail cost more loading time , and is heavy for the browser. I hope if MS buy Y! to bring new life to this company. My first e-mail box ever was from yahoo (more than 10 years ago) :) Nostalgic

Yahoo actually gets more traffic than Google. It's a portal, not just a search engine. No search engine is perfect; it they were, there would only be one answer, the right one. The best search engine would be a human edited one, by votes of relavency. That's why Google uses the social sites for it's serps more and more..

First thing Yahoo needs to do is get rid of its spam.

Spam sites are the reason I don't use Yahoo as often as Google.

They need to get back to basics and fix the shit that people take for granted that work at other engines.

"yahoos email is better than gmail's"

Maybe its better, but its not easier. I have gmail, hotmail and yahoo and can tell you that out of all 3 gmail is the most easiest to use and quickest to shoot off an email with minimal clicks.

A valuation of $ 50 Billion dollars, no way they are dying. They have some very good products in their hand like del.icio.us, flickr, answers, messenger, yahoo mail and so many others. In mail market google holds just 5%. I know there are lot of google fan boys here but realize google is getting stronger, when corporations get stronger they start dictating users what to do and what not to do.

If Microsoft does not buy Yahoo, Google will have no competitor, already we are seeing publishers getting 1 cent per click, Google advertising revenue increases where as web publishers ad revenue decreases. When market is growing so fast why are web publishers making less money than previous years. Google is stealing money from us.

first of all yahoo never claimed to be best search engine, basically this is a web directory, but as long as they have one of the first free email services, they have gained regular visitors, and started to provide news for them.
Now yahoo is a good place for everything, HotJobs by yahoo, is one of the best places to find job, great automotive site, greatest news and articles. Google doesn't have this :)

In regards to getting on top of the search game, quite simply they're going to have to make some drastic and revolutionary changes to get people's attention and get better results with their search engine. In the short-term, they can hold on to lesser educated users by providing better content alongside their search, something to make people stick around despite the low quality of search engine results.

Yahoo does not have the management team or the tech savvy to improve their search and advertiser experience. The ysm advertiser applications (Panama) are being outsourced to an inexperienced offshore team. Those applications are still several years behind Google and Google will increase their lead as Yahoo changes course and invests heavily in rich media ads. The rich media ad solution is a network or exchange (apex). Apex has limited analytics as Yahoos data-tracking is broken for the foreseeable future. That means the optimizations required for the exchange will be short changed. Take a quick look at Google's adwords/tvads to see where the trail is blazing. Yahoo hasn't begun to conceptualize the video ad space yet. Is Yahoo dieing? Well ... Yahoo is a great brand, mail is adequate, messenger sort of works (and I mean sort of, try conferencing - unstable) but internet growth and advertising dollars will not depend on those apps. Revenue depends on: search monetization (Google has that tied up), richmedia on community websites like myspace.com (Yahoos Apex does not address the analytics required to optimize cpm), video ads (Yahoo hasn't even conceptualized this yet). I believe the MS acquisition of Yahoo is good ... for Yahoo! employees. How did Yahoo get into this position? On some teams there are 6 layers of management between the CTO and developer. Too many chiefs not enough scientists and engineers. Will this change, I think so when MS gasps after they unwrap their Christmas present.

yahoo never had strenght in terms of search. its killer tool was the portal/directory but its branching out too much.

google's quality has lowered as its algo's have died in importance. people know how to game google so its now full of spam , blogs, shopping links which is why google has started to become more of a portal.

for me teoma was by far the best , this was before ask bought them. the only problem they had was scalability of the algo to several billion pages indexed.

time now is for localised engines ie yandex in russia, baidu in china etc

I suspect that there is a certain amount of wishful thinking going on here. While Yahoo search my be lagging in the US and UK, it is still enormously ahead of the market in Japan, and dominates the IM market in a number of territories.

While the Yahoo search engine is utter arse as far as a UK user reads, it continues to focus on its now core markets in the Far East, where aspects such as the domain name are extremely important to the user.

The internet is an international concept and in order to provide a pragmatic result, a business must necessarily compromise in favour of the majority of its customers. Just because you are in the UK and your little affiliate website is ranking poorly does not mean that Yahoo is dying.

Having said all that, from a western point of view, they are in decline, and I give them 6 months before m$oft take them over.

Yahoo doesn't seem to be really dying, they just expanded advertising in different countries. Their whole site is great, specially the media. I don't think they are even focused on their engine as much as they used too anyways. But I do use google over yahoo, just because google for some reason I always type google but I won't type yahoo lol.

Yahoo and Google are like head and tail of a coin. Yahoo will never die and google will never extint. Yahoo must realize that google is trying to design product where yahoo or msn have a masss appeal and they are able to reach the people because google adwords and google adsens. Google is able to develop better products and they dont have any competitor contextual advertising.Hence hoe can Yahoo be a number one. Here are some of my suggestion.
1. Open Yahoo Publisher Network to international audience.
2. create a product similar to google bloggers.com
3. Free unlimited mail access with POP3.
4. Create multiple free products like google pack.
5. Takeover some businesses to expand the market reach.

I don't think yahoo is dying of anything soon, While they may not be focusing on their search engine they are trying to expand in other areas. Yahoo still stands at #2 and so far no one seems to be trying to take that spot.
