Hello guys,

I was wondering what is some popular directory listing software that we can purchase or get for free to start a directory site.

Also is there are any tips or tricks you guys have for starting something like this, we would love to know.

THanks.

Get phpld, version 2 is free, version 3 costs a tiny bit.
There are lots of free templates for phpld, plus paid templates.
To get categories (this is so much easier than doing it one at a time, plus adding sub-categories) just to to the buy, sell, trade forum...look at either templates or services.
Someone there is selling like about 5-7 different category lists.
I bought one for states, you can see it here:

Easy to put into your mysql database.

SBD Directory Script (http://www.snowblind-development.com) is a relatively cheap script that's easy to install & has a lot of nice features. The script is completely SEO friendly so you can gain maximum benefit from your directory.

You might also want to checkout hotscripts.com as they have a ton of scripts in different programming languages available...some are free, others are commercial.

Good point Carmen. http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Link_Indexing/index.html is the right category :)
