I made a page of good web design books (http://www.gobbly2100.com/web-development/web-design-books) if your interested in taking a look.
I actually want to write a review on each one also.

Build Your Own Web Site the Right Way Using HTML and CSS by Ian Lloyd.
Then
HTML Utopia: Designing Without Tables Using CSS by Rachel Andrew and Dan Shafer.
First one's old enough to have two editions sitting at the library. Just check the errata page for any misprints that got through : )

Just take the biggest book you find. Make sure it contains full list of html tags and also plenty of examples. Make sure it's up to date (written recently, so you won't be learning old stuff... preferably XHTML 1.0 strict and newer).
When picking book about CSS, do the same. Pick the biggest one you find (= more info and examples). Make sure it contains complete list of CSS attributes and is up to date!

first, try www.w3schools.org
XHTML/CSS is very easy to learn and it may not be worth your money to purchase a book (only books I've purchased are for JavaScript, PHP, and RoR)

Careful, I saw a book called XHTML Bible (part of a Bible series I think, very large book) and was only just written in 2004,in the full swing of CSS, and yet it was still encouraging frames, image maps, the FONT tag, and table-based layouts (though it also had CSS and the like). A colleague of mine was trying to learn with that book, and I snatched it from him and gave him mine before he could do any more damage.
