Google Inc. has expanded its online payment service so that users can buy and sell everything from bicycle brakes to Beanie Babies through its Web site, posing an immediate challenge to eBay Inc.

since G maintains relationships and accounts witih site owers for adsense in all countries while paypal has only some 40+ "paypal countries"
it means that Google has the logistics to secure transactions with all world and thus make gobal commerce and global payment possible

also for use as adsense payment method hopefully resulting in EFT to all countries in a paypal like instant payment system

if done so then paypal might be near-out of business as it lacks the necessary computer power needed to do secure global transactions

for nwo its just beta and without fraud protection no threat
if professionalized with fraud protection in exchange for a normal fee then the situation is totally different and out of beta for real life use

Frankly, Americans are slow to trust newcomers.

Google got in late on this one.

Definitely a threat. As hans said, there's only a bunch of countries that PayPal is fully covering, Google would defenitely cover most. Also Google's reputation (in general) is far better than Ebay's/PayPal's.

Someday they'll probably add a new block to Gmail with their payment service. Who wouldn't check it out? ;)

Maybe google got in late on this one, but most americans already trust Google. And remember google didnt sell out their information to the government. So they are definately trust worthy.

Google has the power to launch a contender to ebay. It would be an interesting thing to watch unfold.

I would love to watch Google eat paypal alive. I hope papal dies a horrible, slow, pain ridden death!

I think whatever happens this would open up a lot of good things for the consumers/merchants. I hope..

Definitely a threat, Google is a newcomer to that industry, but with their popularity, it shouldn't take long for people to start using them as a good ebay alternative. Wondering if they will also start an affiliate program which will top ebay's cj program :)

I doubt they will be able to conquer Ebay.

Ebay is a name that people associate with Auctions just like Google is associated with search.

They will need not only a good quality product/service but also a HUGE marketing effort.

Google has already shown to us that what eveer he does it is better than all other competition, and Google has made a very good reputation so far and I don't think people will doubt trusting him. So that is definitely a very big threat to eBay

I think google here is competing with paypal not with ebay.

PayPal is an eBay company

Thanx for the clarification.

I already know paypal is ebays company, but i was saying google is trying to take on the online payment part not the bidding game.

As far as bidding is concerned, eBay is king and i dont think google can beat ebay in that dept.

If google were to offer a better online payment system then paypal, with international reach, then it could definitely threaten a significant part of eBays revenues. It's hard to say how much exactly because eBay doesn't breakout paypal numbers in their financial results.

However, eBay certainly won't be going away overnight because of the so-called 'network effect'. Essentially the value of a network grows exponentially, and eBay has the largest audience/network for classifieds type-sales bar none.

Depends on how Google goes about lauching it - if they lauch a huge advertising campaign, then sure it does.
