I need to register a .COM.BR domain for a (Portuguese-language) client. I understand a local contact is needed in order to register a Brazilian domain, and that several registration providers offer such a service. Can anyone recommend a registrar for Brazilian domains for a foreign company? The cheapest I've found so far is $130 US.

To resgister Brazilian domains is http://www.registro.br/ is the oficial place, it cost 30R (about 13USD), you need to create an user and you provide an CPNJ (is a number that identifies the companies for taxes and juridic stuff)

hope it helps

domainer.com.br
US$35.00 USD for one year/renewals

(There is always some risk, Brazil is one of the wort placesto register domains)

Thanks for the responses cornchild and YesBrilliant - positive rep added :).

I'll go for domainer.com.br as I don't have a CPNJ.

why is that?

Brasil is an emerging Country, certainly not the best place where to find security but cerainly not the worst one.

CNPJ
Local presence
No online access for domain management
You have to call/email your host for almost everything, like DNS changes
Lenghty, bureaucratic registration process
Wide need for IDs (ID company, ID admin, ID technical, ID billing)
...
