Content Proximity Question

Hi folks,

I've a question for those familiar with adsense (and hopefully, the handful that have optimized for adsense specifically)..

Has anyone noticed scenarios where adsense ads are influenced heavily by proximal content. I've a page heavily themed for real estate. But in the immediate vacinity of the adsense j, I've some densely packed content relating to travel and Holiday accommodation, and of course, the adsense content is travel/accom related.. even though the surrounding travel/accom content accounts for less than 10% of the page total.

Has anyone noticed proximal influences ?
Of course, it's about competitive availablility too.. but I doubt these ads are outbidding real estate - and my site is clearly dedicated to real estate.

yeah, I had it on my new vbulletin board - just vb ads.

There's a line you can insert into your adsense code on your html that goes something like :

google_ad_format = "468x60_as";
google_page_url = "http://www.teneric.co.uk/forums";
google_ad_channel ="";

See the "google_page" - point it to where you want to be themed. (I copied this from DP's board - thanks Shaun !)

Don't know exactly how it works but I dont get VB ads anylonger

(obviously change my "http://sjfhsjhfsj" to your own !)

Ummmmm ... that google_page_url optionis a new one on me ... doing some research seems to indicate it's often used in frames, but if I understand you correctly, you can use it to better define the theme for that page.

So would you setup a "sandbox" page that is themed/worded exactly what keywords you are targetting, point the variable to there, and then not worry about what content shows up on your main page?

Pointing it to a page that is not the same content would be a big violation of their TOS I would imagine.

Understood. But I was thinking of using this to HELP Google figure out the right content. For instance, I have some lunar eclipse pictures (http://www.komar.org/faq/lunar-eclipse/) ... but Google puts up a couple of ads for the Mitsubishi Eclipse CAR ... which obviousely has nothing to do with this web site.

I HAVE seen relevent ads - heck, there is even some places that are selling real estate on the moon (seriousely!), but I'm sure the Mitsubishi folks have a lot more money, so their ads end up showing. I don't want to hassle with blocking those various sites, but again, I was just trying to think of some way of "helping" Google figure out better what the web site is about so it can serve up more relevent ads.

Up to you... but I doubt Google wants people "helping" it by pointing it to different content.

OK - probably good advice not to use this feature unless truly needed ... although in the example above, Google definitely mis-classifies the page ... but maybe the guys selling lunar real estate will starting bidding higher and start showing up again! ;-)

yeah - Ive taken that down for the moment - I just can't stop it showing vbulletin ads although I have an adsense at the bottom of my forum and that shows up correctly.......

Anyone want to advertise instead !?

(PS - Shaun I did this as I saw your code has this in at the top of your forum - what code did you cut & paste into this ? - the additional line for the frames is :

google_page_url = document.location;

but that didnt work for me either :confused:

This is an ancient thread...

Content proximity describes how close content is to other content. In the case above, I was talking about about content that surrounded an Adsense Ad, on a real estate page. The content was very close to the adsense ad.

I think meta tags and domain name have alot to do with ads also.
