Confusion about uniques over time

I keep seeing websites that claim to a certain amount of uniques a month, but then I realize that this calculation is simply from their uniques each day in that month... and then to make it even worse it's the same damn people every day. Is this right? Doesn't seem to be. If you're calculating uniques over a month, it should be uniques for that month, not uniques for each day counted up, right?

I never understood the correct way to do uniques, but I suppose google analytics tracks uniques per day, or per month (and that the per month isn't simply the uniques each day in the month added up), right?
