Is there LESS pressure to get on DMOZ - Since Google Changed its Policies

1- First Google removed it's Google/ DMOZ directory off the homepage and substituted Froogle

2- Since Yahoo Recently declared it's independance and became very competative - Many Fortunes no longer COMPLETELY Rise and Fall on their Google Listing

3- Beta MSN may be a R-E-A-L Competator

4- Quality Link Exchanges have become an industry onto itself - almost a Peer2Peer Network of traders available


Does it feel LESS urgent to get a DMOZ listing :confused: - many were stiving because of predictably better Google Rankings. The Landscape has REALLY changed.

My DMOZ listings have meant way too much to me to ever discount Open Directory.

I get 500 uniques a day in one site from my dmoz listing alone (direct traffic). I'll never give it up just because google does.

I don't think, though, that google has any sort of "special weight" assigned to dmoz. it's just valuable because the link will be replicated so many times over on so many different sites.

Yep, DMOZ is still important so long as it gets traffic and gets picked up.

I'm actually to shy for that. Plus hate anyone thinking I come here to get a few cheap links. I may after I've made enough contributions to earn the right. Until then... I'll just continue to come to be part of the community and be among some of the brightest and learn ;) I figured the rest will take care of itself with some hard work.

Question on DMOZ, what if your category you need listed in doesn't have an editor... is that bad news? Will it take longer to get accepted?

that's a huge question!

Work up through the categories until you find an editor then consider how many categories, how many sites and how many submissions they administer. Then you might have an idea of good or bad.

You also need to consider that the editor will have pet subjects, maybe yours, maybe not. You won't be able to tell how long the editors have been in the category. If they are new then there may be quite a backlog and you don't know what their focus will be
* tidy up
* get rid of duplicates
* tackle oldest first
* tackle pet subjects first
* or something else altogether

I don't think there are guidelines about which of those are right, best ...

Even if your cat has an editor it may be just one of many cats they edit and this one may not be the focus right now. Although a named editor would imply a specific interest.

I think Sarah nailed it. Don't get discouraged as your topic may be something any editor may enjoy and periodically review. Whatever you do, don't resubmit your site after your initial submission as this will indeed push it back to the "End of the line", nor push editors to review your site.

The best advise I ever got was submit your site, then forget about it. Go out and build your back links, partners and traffic and check back every 6 months as are the new guidelines. In the mean time, should the DMOZ listing kick in, you'll see it in bonus b/l and traffic. If it doesn't, your sites not suffering to much for not having it yet. :)

It's worked for me, and as my ex-wife used to tell me all the time... I'm not the brightest bulb in the pack...lol

Its been a while now since I submitted my sites and still nothing on either of the. I hope DMOZ hurries up and gets them on there. Why does it take soo long.
