DMOZ catagories

With all of the sites using DMOZ's catagories, I wonder, do they update those catagories on a regular basis, or is it a one time thing?

The categories get changed, modified or updated as any issues come to the editors attention.

The listings within the categories are being constantly worked on - although some categories literally take years to get attention if they don't have an editor.

One a site's listing is approved it will be visible within a day.

The suggestions I gave them always got placed sooner or later though. Usually within a month or 2.

They do update on a semi-regular basis. Google seems to update once every two to three months. Others can update on a more frequent or less frequent basis.

I always found it kinda strange that to become an editor, they require you to suggest 3 new sites upfront. I'm more than willing to maintain existing listings and check/approve/edit new ones, but I don't have the time to go and seek out new sites-- particularly for the extremely narrow categories I'd volunteer for... I've had suggestions waiting for many months now, and they still haven't been added.

I just became an editor to a category unlrelated to my guitar site over the weekend. I added a couple of sites but they haven't been made visible yet. I also saw one of my sites had been reviewed and added 10 days ago in another related category but its still not visible on the public side.

Does it usually take a while once a site has been reviewed and approved? What is the usual time frame (I know you said a day, but that doesn't appear to be the case...unless I'm doing something wrong)!?!?

It can take a while, I noticed that when the editor looked over my catagory all the links I had changed got added immediatly.

From their point of view though, if you cant be bothered to find new sites, you obviously dont like the subject enough. I think its good to have a lengthy application form so they deter undedicated people.

In very narrowly focused categories, there may BE no other sites... Say, for ExciteBike for the 8-bit Nintendo/NES-- there's a category for this on DMOZ if I recall, but there's very few sites. I'd like to add ONE that I know about, but no one manages/edits the category, so it'll never end up getting approved. I would volunteer to manage this category, but I can't find 3 other sites to add. And the next level up is too large, and already has editors-- I don't have time for such a large category, but I could very easily manage a tiny sub-category. I think instead of adding "3" sites, you should have to add 10% or more or something-- so if there's 3 sites in a category, you must add 1 site to be able to manage the category...

I wouldn't exactly call it lengthy...it took 5 minutes for me to fill out and was approved a week later.

That's very true, good point. Who knows how many bogus forms they get filled on a daily basis :D

I definately spent some time on my DMOZ app, which was a bummer because it got "lost" (twice) until I had to pull some internal string (thanks digitalpoint!). I think they have been having some problems with their editor application process. But, I agree that the app should be lengthy to weed out the people that are too lazy to do the work.

My category was updated today. I reviewed the sites and made the changes on Saturday so the update took about 4 days before showing up on the public side. That's not too bad...a lot quicker then what I expected.

They should add a questionaire to test the dedication of editors when applying! I have applied for the 3rd time yesterday, and I hope this time it succeeds. :D
