I have a large number of social bookmarking icons on my website. I joined quite a few and want to know if I should put each of my articles on each of those bookmarking sites that are on my website or is there a better strategy for getting my content listed via social bookmarking?

In fact I also have question about that. You may have say 50 icons for the 50 social bookmark site. It will make your webpage have 50 outbound links.....
Will there be any problem? I am not sure ....
Hope if someone have some insights on that.

That indeed might be a problem. Just use rel="nofollow" on them.

If you would submit every links of your article in your site in just one day they could think that you're a spammer and banned your account.

You might be better off is someone influencal submits the article instead of you. Read my experience about it (http://www.prelovac.com/vladimir/how-to-effectively-use-social-media-sites)

i had my doubts about this social bookmarketing thing but got 339 uniques from stumpleupon on Sat alone, so think that it made it worth it, now just to keep up that pace

I saw a service from addthis.com , which limits it to just one button. At least for sites NOT really deping on social bookmarks an alterative option to a graveyard of bookmarks.

I would suggest thinking of usability rather than seo friendliness: If you feel like your article is so interested for the wide public - go ahead and post it everywhere. I will tell you about my experinece: I usually do add my articles to digg.com to make sure they get indexed by Google. Recently I have had almost a post a day, so depending on how the interesting and appealing the article actually is the # off diggs varied from 0 to 6: I had an article called First dating, advice from a woman (http://blog.escortpages.net/?p=25) that got 0 or 1 digg, and there was a post titled 20 reasons why it’s better to be a woman (http://blog.escortpages.net/?p=20) - I frankly enjoyed writing about it, as a result I got 6 diggs in several minutes after posting. What a pity the listing is not staying on the front page for long... So I just want to say, that it is worth doing 50 social bookmarking submission only if you feel like your article is really interesting!

Exactly. Advisable number of links to submit is 1-2. Multiple links submitted in a day is clearly spamming.

I used addthis.com and added my index site and each article I had on my site, 9 or 10 in total
