Domain help needed

hi, i am new in this area.. but i wanted to know ,currently i have a free blog from blogger

a want a domain for my blog

but many ppl have advised me to buy my own domain, this way i can not only get more traffic but my ranking in search engines will also increase...is this true??

i was thinking of buying it at a later stage, but is it tru if i do tht then i have to start from scratch to get my blog up in ranking? or i can get a domain any time and it wont effect my ranking..

as i said i am a complete newbie to this i am not sure/ i dont know where to get a domain from, for how long do you get a domain,, wht type of domain should u get i mean a .com or .info or something else..

A new domain name will be like starting from scratch. (re-directs are not always an option)

.com would be the preferred extension if available.

You normally buy on a 2 year purchase basis. Then renew as and when required.
