It's link:www.xyz.com (without space)

The problem is that Google will not list all of your backlinks.
It is said that it will list only the most significant backlinks to a site.

the tool offered in DP forum at
http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/keywords/
gives you correct Google backlinks

a direct search in the most helpful Google pages resulst in the
official Google answer:

http://www.google.com/help/features.html#link

link:www.google.com
would show who links to google

and if you want to know how many / who REALLY links
then you always go to Yahoo with a query like
inks:www . yourdomain . com
w/o spaces of course

while the G result just shows you what G wants you to see or belief
Y shows you the reality of what IS

Just remember that goole does not show ALL the back link. It shows SOME random back links.

link:url is the correct way. It searches for url as a hyperlink.
link: url searches for links to [space]url
link :url searches for "link" and ":url"

How does Google determine WHICH links they show? Is this the hightest Page Rank sites? The lowest Page Rank Page sites? The best optomized sites??

Thanks

To check actual backlinks to your website you should use MSN or yahoo.
do linkdomain:www.domain.com in yahoo.

you can also use www.marketleap.com and their link popularity checker tool.

I am using link popularity check tool available at http://www.checkyourlinkpopularity.com/start-download.htm

You can download this tool from above URL. This tool is helpful for us to see backlinks of numbers of urls at a time in Google, Yahoo, MSN & Teoma

Just check it

Yahoo says 123 backlinks
Msn about the same

Google says 1 yes 1.

How do I increase my ranking if Google wont show all backlinks?

IMHO

Google does not show random pages, nor is anything about google engine random. If you got a link from ebays main page tomorrow it'd show up on the next update.

MSN shows mostly all but lists them in order of importance, so my hip hop site shows hip hop backlinks first and my free directory (in my sig) will most likely show directory lists first and I guarantee you those took a while to get so is not a matter of link seniority.

Yahoo isn't worth anything in my book and since this weeks Newsweek article on how it helped the Chinese gov lock up a guy for 10 years for a site about freedom I'm not using it again.

It depends on how you link your website...

if you use...
www.site.com
http://www.site.com

if i were you i'll check the two... but for linking purposes... you should stick to one... if you decide to use www.site.com then stick with it.

Backlinks are incoming links from other sites. If they are authenticated by search engines as real, then they are seen as a vote from another website to yours. This helps you get a better ranking in the search engines.

I personally trust only one method to check how many links are pointing to your site, Yahoo Site Explorer (https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/).

Some people still prefer using site: command with Google, but the results cannot be trusted.
