I'm just trying to get other opinions upon site-wide links, in this stage of the Google's algorithm. Can you most certainly get penalised for this ? I see discussions by old members all over Webmasterworld, Seochat and others, as to GOogle penalising websites, for JUST a single site-wide link.
Would a rel="nofollow" help in not getting your website penalised by using site-wides ? But then where's the SEO help, if the link has a nofollow ?
And in the final stage, should we just NOT get site-wides ? And stick to single links ?

I think this discussion is going on for quite some time now.
Imo side-wide links will devaluate the complete website. The side-wide links have little or no effect in google ranking anymore. It might be for traffic but not for seo purpose anymore.

Site wide links are fine as long as they are not the predominant link type pointing at your site. Speaking from experience:)

Sitewides are out IMO also, getting a backlink on a relevant page is more important to me. Nothing is worse than looking at a directory with 20 paid footer or sidebar links sitewide. I just skip those and go on to the next.

Aha... Well the real work goes now, to actually find what that ratio is. Do you have any formula in mind ?

Nothing scientific, but i usually try and do a 1/100 ratio. i.e. I don't look for a site wide until I have at least 100 other "regular" links. IMO site wides tend to carry the about the same weight in terms of serp influence (all other factors being equal) as a "regular" link in the Google serps.

I seem to see the same situation for a long time now.
The only problem of mine, is that sometimes i can't get only a single link from various sources. I can get only site-wides. And between to refuse and to accept, i always tend to accept.
I guess i won't anymore :)
Thanks a lot.

I hear ya. Two years ago I would start a new site and get 5 sitewides to it the same day. It was a hard habit to break myself from but I did it:D

why bother much about page rank? what most important is to have traffic from that particular site, no?
