Im just getting started - whats a good starting weight?

Depends on how you define 'good'.

Just think in terms of 'you get what you give'. On average, your ads/links will appear on the same amount and type of pages that you supply. It's more complicated than that, but it's really the best way to think about it.

For reference, a weight of 7,000 resulted in about 200 new backlinks in Google:link.

My base weight says 54,000 --

Whats consolidation?

Base weight of 54k is above average. Consolidation is combining two accounts into 1 (consolidating) if you have more than 1 site that you want to manage on the network.

Not at all... why would you think it works that way? do you think link exchanges are therefore useless as well? How would 1000 links out not be worth 1000 links in?

If this discussion was based solely on PR, than you may have a point. But this Network is not about PR. It's about getting inbound links with anchor text - which is very important in helping you with the SERPs.
