I'm designing a blog at the moment, I can get it to be 2 columns using div tags but not 3.
Can anyone suggest what css to use? thanks

Here's a few articles to check out. some of these sites - alistapart.com in particular - have a number of very good articles on various subjects beyond multi-column layout.
CSS Layout Techniques - glish.com (http://www.glish.com/css/)
Creating Liquid Layouts with Negative Margins - alistapart.com (http://www.alistapart.com/articles/negativemargins/)
More multi-column layouts with javascript to work in multiple browsers - including Netscape 4 (!) (http://www.fu2k.org/alex/css/index.mhtml)
Good article I just now stumbled across, urging good design and suggesting an approach (http://www.alistapart.com/articles/flexiblelayouts/)

I poked around a bit at w3schools.org, useful site. Would you post the url to the page that helped you answer your question? thanks.
