Google adwords increase traffic thats all, does nothing for SERPS or indexing otherwise everyone would be doing it.

Nothing for SERPS. Googleguy from webmasterworld.com confirms this.

Actually I believe Google AdWords helps when you have to position a webpage; not technically (I agree with your opinions), but you can spread your website along de Internet so fast using AdWords, that it's easy for others websites and people to find it and decide what will they do with it.
I know maybe you are not looking for this kind of question, an any other guy which knows a lilte bit of SEO will say that this comment is almost nothing, but tought this idea has to be shared, at least to have it in consideration.

I disagree... at least I did. Last year, and earlier this year, the google adsense ads had your domain in them, so when you searched for "sites containing mydomain.com" you could get a 1000 results just from an adwords campaign alone. Same with overture. Things are different now, since the domain is not on the ad anymore, and it is not in the link. I don't know if you can put your domain in the text or not, but if it is possible (and reasonable ad-wise) I would do it.
My consulting business has a long running (2+ years) campaign that has generated a few really good customers for us - at a cost of a couple hundred bucks a year since it's a pretty small niche (Remedy Software). When I started looking into SEO, I was surprised to see several thousand inbound links - from adwords/overture, dmoz entries, mailing list archives (from my sig), and message board postings. Adwords/overture made up about 50% of the inbound links.

I believe it is a good branding exercise too! If you are getting 2% click through some proportion of the other 98% must be reading your ad, and consciously or even sub-consciously be sold on the "brand".

When I agree with the idea of AdWords helps you ranking/indexing your webpage, I didn't wanted to say it helps you in a direct relationship.
As webvivre said, you can spread your brand easier, and make a lot of people know about your website, also if you have good content, and some great tools, tests,.... you will find how other webpages will link to our web, and your ranking/indexing will increase.

I agree, good point webvivre...
