I've always stuck with online tutorials to learn this kind of stuff. I just don't have the patience to go through those thick books :) Do a few searches for SQL tutorials and I bet you'll come up with a few useful links.

Well, if your database happens to be Oracle, I would recommend "Mastering Oracle SQL" by Mishra and Beaulieu, publisher is O'Reilly.

The best book I've found on advanced SQL is Joe Celko's "SQL For Smarties" - here the link:Click Me For SQL Enlightenment (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1558605762/104-5419851-9866362?v=glance&n=283155)
Despite the 4 out of 5 star rating, many people just fail to "get" the power of SQL. If I had a dime every time I showed a programmer 5 lines of SQL that eliminated 200 lines of programming code, I'd be set ;)
