A few of you have already done this and now I'm trying to also. I want to be able to put in a URL and get the number of links that Google reports back. Do you get the Google link:www.example.com (http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&q=link%3Awww%2Eexample%2Ecom) page and parse through the page to find the number of links or is there an easier way to do it. I have tried this way but I'm not getting the whole page back, so I'm thinking Google does not want it done this way. Any thoughts. Thanks...

You guessed right .. thats why they provided the API .. which would be the best way to go about what you are trying to do.

You can register with GOOGLE and get api license. With that u can query google db for 1000 times in a day.
