Advertising for hosting/colo, etc..

Has anyone had any success using AdWords, or anything else for that matter (suggestions) for advertising web hosting, colocation, dedicated servers, etc.?

I ran an AdWords campaign a while back and did around $150/mo. on my campaign.. I got a helva lot of hits and leads, however, all the leads that turned into orders would usually occur on Sundays and would always be bogus CC orders. I never got anything legit out of it.. I suppose this is one pitfal in advertising online.

Any suggestions? Anyone have luck advertising their inet services?

Welcome to one of the many cut throat, extremely difficult markets in pay per click to turn a profit.

It is not an easy click especially with so many big time competitors. Yet I must say that there is hope and possible sales. I am heavily into a few of these markets and I am able to turn good returns on my clicks. Yet it is no easy task! I recommend you get an analyzer and try to find niche market keywords.

Also, flip the game backwards with these cut throat industries. As you know, an affiliate sale is worth at the minimum, $50 in web hosting. So think about it as you have a specific dollar amount to spend before getting a new customer. Then from there your profits will eventually show if they decide to stay with you.

Well the thing is, our key words I chose were pretty good, IMHO.. And we did get visits, and orders.. Trouble is all the orders were always bogus.

I expressed to Google that while I can easily ban my own IP in Adsense there is no way to ban other IP's or ranges. What I would like to be able to do with Adsense ideally is have a ban list where I can enter certain ranges of IP's from dirt bag countries where bogus orders typically come from (and it is consistent) such that those countries NEVER see my ads.

This is one place where Google is sorely lacking.. ie., the ability to project to a specific demographic, by only displaying ads to specific countries and or netblocks.

They did not seem to like the suggestion.. Anyway.

I tried to adwords for a month (hosting) and got about 50 signups.. wow you say? You wouldn't if I tell you that ALL were bogus, using stolen paypal accounts etc. So, if you're a small host with a tight budget, adwords is not that way to go.

I agree. I wonder if anyone gets any legit business out of adwords, or any internet advertising for that matter.

hehe, I believe that the bigger hosting companies actually do get alot out of google. Look at cj.com as an example, there are hosting providers there who'll pay 100$ for a signup.. make the customer stay for 2 years and you've earned back that money.. so, it's a good investment, but you have to have a pretty large budget.

Seems kinda dangerous to me. I've never been able to figure out how anyone can give a $100 referral on an account that charges like $4.95/mo.

It's called residual income. It pays off especially when the company provides such a good service that not only there is a lifetime deal but referrals as well.
