Dear, Check your pocket and try VBulletin or IPB. If you want to go for free ones than go for SMF or Phpbb.
If you want to make this forum real big and have some plans in your mind than I prefer you to move with VBulletin. I can myself help you in installing Mods as well as can do forum promotion.
If you are really intrested in hiring some team, do hit me a PM.

I think for free forum SMF is much better, upgrade fast and you can change something by yourself

For free I would look at phpbb 3 ... it's in release candidate and is pretty good. Closest feature wise you will get to vbulletin IMO

In fact, I think any prebuilt forum will do the job as long as you put someone behind. Vbulletin and PhpBB are the best in my opinion. I run a phpbb site, in signature, works fine. PHPbb runs also the biggest forum on earth gaiaonline.
phpbb3 seems extremely interesting

The best free community software in no particular order:
PhpBB
MyBB (Considered by many to be vBulletin lite and it deserves that comparison)
SMF
The best professional community software and in no particular order :
vBulletin
Invision Power Board
I personally prefer IPB to vBulletin, and I have owned several "owned" vBulletin licenses before recently switching to IPB. vBulletin has remained stale for the past few years now and has technically not changed much since version 3.0.0 - where as IPB has changed tremendously and continues to offer innovations to their license holders.

Neat point you made there. What innovations do you like in IPB that are not in vBulletin? All you ever hear from people regarding forum software is "vbulletin vbulletin vbulletin ...."

Have to agree.
vBulletin is the best.
And if speak about the free scripts, then myBB is the best :)

Not to bug in but IPB came out with its blog add-on long before VB did (which was recently). IPB also got a social networking plug-in long ago, which VB is still currently in development.
I think VB is a great software, but they don't seem to improve in its features.
