When you get a fresh domain and you know you cant rank in google since of the sandbox the only 2 left are really MSN and Yahoo

My question is which to focus to rank on MSN or Yahoo! Do both of them work the same and ranking for them can be done by getting many backlinks and interal on page links???

About the sandbox first ... It is not necessarry that your site suffers from sandbox theory. As per google , it is not an universal theory but it is triggerred by something . ( I don't know what ).Even if you are hit by sandbox , you can still show up for less competitive terms .
About Yahoo and MSN ... Maintain a good keyword density and concentrate on getting as many links as you can . MSn counts all possibly and yahoo is close .The link structure will later help you in google as well .
Why do you want to choose one between Yahoo and MSN ? I thought it is better if I show up on BOTH ...
Hope that helps .

i originally optimised for MSN (because its the quicker of the 2), i didnt change the site, just added new content now & then and a month or 2 later yahoo started ranking the same pages msn was.

I dunno what was making it rank, but most probally the following.

good navigation, basic SEO, choosing the right keywords & a bit of luck.

i would say anchor text as well but the site hardly has any links pointed to it :) but i suppose a good internal linking structure makes up for that.

Most people don't even need to optimize their website for MSN, it crawls your site somehow, even with the smallest link on this forum is crawled by MSN!!

MSN's bot is like that one girl in high school. She really gets around.

MSN definitley gets you indexed fast...that's what I find anyway. I find that MSN updates it's ranking more often to, so if you work hard on your site and keep the content fresh, you should see results from MSN much sooner than Yahoo.

Talking about my experience only......

Do you wanna bet!!!! Our sites were number one on ALL the search engines of note and once we got so called stuck in the sandpit, we were literally shafted. We were still ranked number very highly on M/ and Y/ and all the rest to be honest, but wow, we soon realized that the impact that Google droppin you can have. It can literally kill you. I don't want to scaremonger but the sooner we stop this monopoly the better, thats why Cantufind (http://www.cantufind.com) came into its own by seperating from The Orange Pages (http://www.theorangepages.com). We were left in the darkness for exactly 8 months from G so speak from EXPERIENCE not hypothesis, no disrespect to anyone, but you have to be a victim to know what its like and the way to get back in.

We looked at relying on M and Y but we were already listed 1 and 3 with our keywords, our traffic ticked over but you really do need to work on getting back in to the G. At least until people realize that we make them what they are and the only way to beat them is to gang up on them. Searchers should be dictating not the search engines, and I work for one. The name is a hint;) Certainly get on with the other 2, but do what you can to your site to make absolutely certain that your site meets their 'Guidelines'. Most of the time it is your own hosts that are to blame, they inadvertantly block you, I have ALL the details of how we eventually got listed back in, and straight in at #5 isn't bad, so you have to concede that we might just know what we are doing.

Good luck, whatever you do, however, we aren't just a competitor of the others, we want to be a Search facility for the people as corny as it sounds.

Respect to all.

if you can get like 10 links per day it must be enouth.. link exchange is good and there are some sites that will help you do that .. i've got +1000 links in one day displayed on msn with an account like that.

and as far as the sandbox - that is just a myth. any site can go from PR 0 to PR 5 or PR 6 within one Google PR update if the SEO is good. I have 4 new sites regsitered that will get PR 5 from PR 0 on the next google update so stop the sandbox myth. ;)
