HI,

I have a frustrating problem. I'm using Reciprocal Manager (Kevin Ocasio) and I was looking for sites using the same links manager to exchange links with them. Everytime I try to add my links on those sites, I get a "Please check your URL - 404 Page not found" error.

I checked both my homepage (http://www.e-money-machine.com and my link exchange page http://www.e-money-machine.com/partners/ but had no problem.

Does anybody get a 404 page error when going to my site above?

I tried opening my site from 2 different computers and it was fine.

Thanks a lot in advance for all your help.

Dinar.

I got the same error when I submitted to a directory . It said the URL could not be validated . May be the server is not allowing some types of bots etc.
Not sure .
Anybody here has some explainations for this ?

I don't know if you're using RM 3.x or the new (and somewhat disastrous) RM 4.

Reciprocal Manager 3.x works but has several bugs. If you're having trouble submitting your site to other RM directories, the probable cause is your robots.txt file.

RM 3.x seems to regard any robots.txt file as an attempt to block SE spiders.

So even if your robots.txt file is blank, you will get errors when you try to add a link to someone else's RM directory. If you don't strictly need a robots.txt file, delete it. Then your attempts to add to RM directories will be just about 100 percent successful.

If your site needs its robots text file, you won't be able to add your site to a RM directory unless they have unchecked the "Check for robot directives" box in their admin link checking settings.

To ensure people can add their links to your 3.x RM directory, you need to go to your own admin area and click on "link checking".

Then uncheck the following boxes:

Automated link checking
Crawl partner's sites
Check for robot directives
Check link text
Check for JavaScript redirection

The good news is that, if you do all of the above, RM will still check link-partners' sites to make sure they haven't removed their recip.

All in all, I'd say Reciprocal Manager is not a very good directory script.

I hope that helps. :)

Thanks explorer,

I've deleted the robot.txt file. I tried adding my link again but this time I got this message

"Please check your URL:" -- and then blank.

Before, it was "Please check your URL: 404 Page Not Found".

Is there anything else that I could try to fix it?

Also, I'm surprised to know that even if I unchecked the boxes that you said in your post, RM would still check my link-partners' sites. I didn't know that. So what are the boxes for then?

I'm using RM3.30 by the way. I was going to upgrade to RM4 but Kevin withdraw the release before I did it. Lucky me. :D

I tried adding my links on other sites that use other links manager than RM. I got the same problem. Can anybody help me see what the problem is?

The site http://www.e-money-machine.com is powered by Joomla! Does that effect the link submitting thing?

Please somebody help! :(
